Review: Rangers’ summer window rated so far

With the capture of Jon McLaughlin confirmed yesterday to follow up on the signing of Calvin Bassey, Rangers have now secured two new members of the group to add to the permanent signature of Ianis Hagi some weeks ago.

And while there are still many weeks left of this window, and possibly many months given the strange circumstances this year, we have now effectively had one month of 2020’s summer business and we can start to form some sort of early opinions.

And while we’re sure both McLaughlin and Bassey will add their own qualities to the squad, there can be little denying it’s not quite the overhaul many supporters might have optimistically hoped for with July around the corner.

Remember, by this stage on Gerrard’s initial appointment Rangers had already secured Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor, Jamie Murphy’s permanent deal, Niko Katic, Connor Goldson and Jon Flanagan.

These were all players we expected to be major parts of the first team, and they all were, for that initial first season.

This time round at this stage it’s a Leicester kid and a backup goalie for McGregor.

We’re not saying ‘wur doomed’ but last summer by around now we’d signed up Hastie, Jones, Aribo, Stewart, Edmundson, and Steven Davis on a permanent.

It’s not exactly the progress we need this year at this point.

Yes, there are extraordinary circumstances but quite frankly it hasn’t made much different to the European transfer market this summer – deals are still flying left right and centre and other SPL clubs have already been active in overhauling their squads.

But Rangers have only added two squad members, and technically they’re to replace six that we got shot of. One goalie to replace two departed, and one LB to replace two departed.

Meanwhile the first team squad doesn’t really seem to have received much in the way of enhancements. To us, this squad is some considerable distance, in its present state, off challenging for the title.

But hey, what do we know. What do YOU think of the window so far? We’ll leave it over to you.

How do you rate the window so far?
