Is Steven Gerrard ready for ‘The Trident’?

This is one we’ve covered once or twice before, and with a new season coming up, surely it is finally time for Steven Gerrard to give it a go?

March 8th this year. 77 minutes and it’s a struggling 0-0 v Ross County. We’re in the dying embers of the match, and Stevie FINALLY relents and brings on Jordan Jones to replace Ianis Hagi to give Rangers the long-awaited ‘trident’ up front of Jones on one wing, Ryan Kent on the other, both flanking Alfredo Morelos.

Rangers score within literally 40 seconds of the NI international’s introduction.

Thereafter, Jones’ addition makes Rangers punchier, quicker, and far more dangerous – more pace and more aggression on the flanks.

Is this finally the season Gerrard caves to giving this trident a proper go, or will he stubbornly avoid it as per his want?

The fact is Jones was signed as a foil for Kent, albeit at the time Kent was only a loan and Jones was a pre-contract.

When the NI cap arrived at Ibrox, it looked like, after Kent joined, that while Jones would be out for a while after his Old Firm mishap, his return would see him teaming up with the former Liverpool winger.

But sadly both a lot of Rangers fans and Gerrard himself have held Jones’ indiscretion at Ibrox against him, and refused to forgive him. We don’t ever recall any other Rangers player simply not being given a second chance by so many, and it’s frankly confusing that the manager would choose a grudge over an excellent wing choice.

Maybe, just maybe our boss will finally give the trident the chance. Arguably (probably not arguably in all honesty) Rangers’ most potent attack.

Is this the season?

Do you want ‘The Trident’?

Yes, give it a go
Nope, not good enough
