Are Rangers ready for #stopthetims?

As we spoke earlier, Kenny Miller has suggested to Scotland’s finest red tops that Rangers must sell Alfredo Morelos to cash in and fund a strong opposition to Celtic’s 9.5IAR attempt.

And the question has to be, what state are Rangers actually in presently? Are we even close to being able to prevent Celtic next season?

The brutal answer, sadly, has to be no. We’ve lost 6 players, fair enough, willingly, but now have just one left back who will likely be sold anyway. We have no reliable strikers, and while we have enough midfielders to line up the Mall, we definitely don’t have a balanced squad right now equipped to win the league.

Add the doubts about Steven Gerrard, especially post-Christmas, and we can’t say the optimism is too high at present.

And sadly the theme we get from our readers isn’t much different.

There’s a real lack of positivity and belief about Rangers from you at the moment, admittedly not helped by the fraud that is the league we play in and those who govern it, but being purely football-based for a moment there’s a sense that Rangers aren’t overly well-prepared for next season.

Maybe we’re reading you all wrong, maybe you’re all far more inspired than us right now, and that’s great – get some of that good feeling over here please because we definitely want to feel like we’ll win the league next campaign.

But taking you all at face value, you’re feeling about as optimistic as we are.

Of course, there’s a caveat – we have a whole summer to rebuild, to prepare a squad we’re happy with.

But Miller is right – Rangers have to cash in on Morelos, and Barisic, to fund the kind of summer splurge we need to have a squad and team good enough to go the distance this time.

It’s all very well saying ‘on our day we can beat Celtic’. That’s not enough. We need to beat the whole league over the whole season. And that’s what we need to invest in.

Hopefully we’ll have the cash to do that, and it will rely on those key player sales.

But at present? Sadly no.
