Exodus – Steven Gerrard makes ruthless squad statement

Many things stood out about yesterday’s club developments of 6 departures, and we’ve covered a few already, but one very notable one is that thanks to the exits of Andy Halliday, Jason Holt, Wes Foderingham, Jordan Rossiter, Jak Alnwick and Jon Flanagan, Rangers now have no players out of contract this summer.

That all players who were out of contract are now gone, and weren’t even close to being renewed does send a message that squad filler will not be regarded as good enough any longer.

It was ruthless, and it was brutal, and we will certainly have a revoltingly fawning piece regaling you of the virtues of Andy Halliday later, but generally we accept he and his five former colleagues weren’t good enough to progress the club in the way we need.

And the club is clear that with the last remnants of the ‘out-of-contracters’ now gone, Gerrard and the board are streamlining the squad, ditching the dead wood, and there are now far less of these kinds of stragglers left in the group.

The only questionable players now in Rangers’ squad in terms of just what importance they hold are Brandon Barker, Jake Hastie, Glen Middleton and Matt Polster.

Obviously we don’t want to add Greg Docherty, Jamie Murphy and Ross McCrorie to this but they’re just not wanted by the manager as far as we can tell.

But we are pleased to see so much chafe being shipped out, not being renewed, and being waved off politely.

It demonstrates progression, but of course, we need something even more dramatic this summer to demonstrate a team capable of winning the league.
