With the confirmed addition of Ianis Hagi to the Rangers ranks, on the assumption he isn’t immediately being sold, Ibrox Noise wanted to look deeper into this transaction.

The details, the numbers, the player, the future.

So, as we know Hagi, while not the best player we’ve seen grace our shirt, was certainly a breath of fresh air this year. His energy, attitude, mobility and technical quality was notable, and the refreshing thing is that was mostly achieved out of position on the right wing.

Hagi is a pure 10, a creative playmaker with a boisterous engine, and mostly in the wrong place he secured 2 assists and 3 goals in 12 appearances.

He’d clearly do a tonne more damage more centrally placed.

But as for the deal itself?

£3M down from £4.5M (which we’ll also look into separately later) and spread over 3 years, making it just £1M per year, which is utterly manageable. That’s a fantastic number for an international player, less than half the price of Ryan Kent who impressed considerably less in the whole of last campaign than Hagi did for his one-month cameo.

And those are the numbers and the details, some of them anyway.

As for the player? He only lacks in one area in his game, and that’s pace. It’s why he has all the tricks in the book and is an impressive player to say the least but he lacks that mid-term pace to beat defenders by sheer speed which separates the very good from the great. He has everything else – technical quality, low centre of gravity, goals, assists, energy, and he’s versatile.

But that lack of pace is why he can’t quite ascend to a Premier League, a La Liga – the inability to do defenders for pure speed unlike the top top players.

That all said, it didn’t stop him nailing two goals and an assist anyway v Braga, which was the bulk of his success at Ibrox, and quality like that persuaded Rangers to part with the cash to Genk for the Turk-born playmaker’s services.

Hopefully we see more.
