As two men depart Ibrox, it leaves a massive problem for Stevie

So yesterday’s confirmation of the single biggest Rangers exodus since the summer of 2015 raises a lot of issues and key questions, and we’re going to go through a few of them today, and in this entry we look at a position which has been massively reduced in number:

Left back.

Rangers now have just one registered left back on our books in Borna Barisic, and our manager has made the patent decision that Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan just aren’t good enough even as deputies.

This is 100% fair on Flanagan – let’s face it, he was a dreadful signing who was nowhere near the level needed at Ibrox. His reputation preceded him and while everyone deserves a second chance, we’d rather his hadn’t been at Ibrox. He did nothing ‘wrong’ for our club, he was just miles off the quality needed and we can’t really fathom why he was brought in beyond being a Gerrard pal.

Halliday can feel a little harder done by. He was at times a more than proficient at LB – some good dead ball delivery and a hard worker, plus reasonably decent defending made him an able deputy especially during 18/19 when Barisic was absolute garbage. He might wonder why he’s not been renewed when so many of his colleagues were, and after giving the club his all.

But it leaves us completely snookered at LB. With Barisic himself likely to leave this summer, Rangers may end up with zero LBs and that’s hardly ideal going forward.

It’s certainly about raising the level of the squad – guys like Halliday and Flanagan aren’t good enough for Rangers to keep improving, but it leaves us desperately short in their position. Especially if Barisic is sold too.

We would obviously assume there’s a plan in place, but then, we’ve hardly been linked with many LBs aside the silly story which turned a player recommendation (Barry Douglas) into a player link, so we guess we just put our faith in this being fixed before long.
