Father Gheorghe confirms rumour about Ianis Hagi

Romanian legend Gheorghe Hagi has confirmed that Rangers’ agreement with his son Ianis is first refusal, and contractually the Ibrox side gets first pick at his permanent signature, if that is the route Rangers want to take.

The attacking midfielder is currently on loan in Govan, of course, and while his form had dipped a little going into the shutdown, the bulk of his displays for Steven Gerrard had been impressive indeed, convincing a great number of fans his capture long term would be a good move.

It would reportedly cost £4.5M to secure him, but his father has now confirmed Rangers are first in the queue at that price:

“His position is that Rangers have it in writing from Genk that they can buy him, so it all depends on Rangers.”

So from the horse’s mouth, we now know 100% it’s not just an option to buy, it’s an outright categorical first refusal which means even if Real Madrid bid £50M to Genk, £4.5M will still sign the playmaker for Rangers.

Of course, we still have no idea if Rangers will actually take the option up, and his father has claimed there’s other offers if they don’t, but Gary Mac did confirm it’s been in discussion, which, of course, we’d expect.

It’s a question of money, and with things inevitably tough the next few months, we’re not sure if Rangers will be able to afford around £5M.

But we’ll see.
