The Romanian youngster and son of legendary player Gheorghe Hagi has been able to showcase his talent during his first months at Rangers. Ianis Hagi made the move during the January transfer window and in only 6 appearances, he has shown he one day could be a top-tier player.

Assistant manager Gary McAllister has admitted Ianis Hagi has wowed Rangers so much they are looking at signing him on a long-term deal. The 21-year old attacking midfielder was outstanding during the impressive comeback when Rangers were two goals down against Braga, in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 clash.

Rangers are now considering trying to permanently sign Ianis Hagi by activating his release clause, which stands at £4m. Hagi is currently spending a six-month-long loan spell with the Scottish giants from Belgian club KRC Genk, where he was not able to make an impact and spent most of his time on the bench.

The £4m buyout clause could be considered quite low as the number 10 is also a Romania international. Unfortunately, because of the present crisis, Rangers’ management can only judge the player on eleven appearances and might still be taking a risk if it decides to trigger the clause. Hagi played six times in the Premiership, two SFA Cup games and three in the Europa League.

It is likely that Rangers will pay the £4m as the risk of overpaying seems like a reasonable one to take. The player himself also wants to stay as he reaffirmed his long-term commitment to Rangers despite interest from Serie A giants Lazio.

Might Racing Genk be regretting setting the buyout clause for Hagi this low? We tend to think the Belgian champions probably would act differently if they could reevaluate their decision.
