Steven Gerrard announced today, in a frustrated manner, that some players had ‘pushed themselves further away’ from contention after today’s comfortable win over the conquerers of Aberdeen in the UEL.

Gerrard used the vast swathes of his squad, notably excluding Ross McCrorie, Jake Hastie, Jamie Murphy and Glenn Middleton, for the match against Lokomotiv, and was interested to see which fringe men stepped up and which ones didn’t.

Obviously it’s for him to know which ones he felt took their chance, but we’re going to spread a little conjecture with some supposition as to who we think Gerrard feels did their chances harm today.

Greg Docherty:

A quiet second half, didn’t stand out. But then equally, he knows he has no future at Rangers under Gerrard so it’s hard now for him to be motivated. He’s basically being professional but he’s given in.

Brandon Barker:

Out of his depth, as he has been mostly since he arrived, this was a mistake signing in panic over believing we’d not get Kent. Barker is simply not up to playing for Rangers FC.

Sheyi Ojo:

As we said before, Ojo’s lost his place at Ibrox and this was a chance for him to shine. Yes, he did score and assist, but his performance was the usual Ojo. We’re hoping this loan gets terminated as soon as possible in truth.

Andy Halliday:

Showed why he’s been reduced to a bench player – has totally lost his place now, and will not play much bar injury or suspension, and like Docherty, this has hurt his morale. It showed today in a lethargic performance.

Jon Flanagan:

Ok he was played as a CB, but he still looked underwhelming. Not like a player desperate to get back in. But like Halliday, how can he – Borna Barisic has that slot now and Tavernier will never shift from RB.

This was a chance for some fringe players to grab their chances, and we have to say some of them definitely did.
