‘Second chance’ – Stevie ready to give fringe man a go…

Steven Gerrard appears ready to hand Jordan Jones a second chance, despite interest down south, following his long-awaited return from injury.

The winger, 25, has been out three months, and while recently regaining fitness, had been left out of the match day squad – only to get an impressive half in Dubai as one of the players Gerrard hinted had pushed himself closer to contention.

The manager said:

“He’s a good player but he’s had a frustrating time. He started his Rangers’ career really strong and it looked like he was going to contribute really heavily and then he was missing 12 weeks. Just before the break, we were waiting for the real Jordan to stand up but he probably just ran out of time. On Saturday’s evidence, he looks like he’s come back with the bit between his teeth and that’s what I want to see. I want to see him trying to force his way into the 11 and he done himself no harm. I thought his performance was really good.”

Quite honestly it’s the first strong and positive words Gerrard’s really said about Jones, and he certainly wasn’t kidding in September when he said the NI winger would have to really fight to get back in his team.

But Rangers’ wing options lack quality depth, with really only Ryan Kent as a firmly established proper winger. Sheyi Ojo has lost favour, Jamie Murphy’s future looks bleak, Glenn Middleton seems quite a distance away from the match day squad, Brandon Barker isn’t good enough, and Joe Aribo isn’t strictly a winger.

So Jones’ return would be a welcome fillip in that sense.

The only twist in the plot would be a firm and temping bid from down south with Blackburn, Middlesbrough and Stoke among the interested parties.

We’ll see if he’s one Stevie wants to keep after all.

  1. Getting Jones back is good news. Kent needs the competition as well needing our best players back for the run in!

  2. I dont mean to keep sound like im writing depressive messages on here but it seems like we are getting rid of players that we could really use, Docherty and Jones, but also Rudden, Rudden obv wasnt ready but he can score goals and mabay another loan for him to blossom more. I think we rush into a lot of decisions just now. We will be battling on 3 fronts from now to the summer and Docherty and Jones will be needed for that.

    • We've moved on Shug and we're looking for better players than the ones mentioned. Gerrard has seen plenty of these players and obviously believes we need better. I'd go along with that. If you really like Docherty and Rudden then rejoice in the fact we are out looking for better.

  3. Ruddens young we could easily send him out on more loans until he develops more. Docherty never got a chance really.
