Rangers winger might be in some major trouble

The fortune of Glenn Middleton has been put in great doubt after the young winger was left out of Rangers’ trip to Dubai.

The Gers are home now, but Middleton spent yesterday doing his best to prove himself with a goal v Motherwell in a Development side match, as opposed to sitting on a flight home after being part of the group out in the Middle East.

The truth is Stevie, like with Greg Stewart, struggles to use Middleton – he doesn’t seem quite ready (or perhaps good) enough for the first team, but he’s probably a bit too good for the ‘reserves’.

And so it goes that Rangers are seeking the right solution for his future, with a loan out being likely the best answer.

It mustn’t be forgotten that Middleton is 20 now – by no means an OAP but in football terms a player who is reaching an age where it’s kind of now or never at his present club.

For example, Ryan Kent, between 19-22, just didn’t make it at Liverpool, instead being content with loans out before he got his ideal move to Rangers.

But it was clear he wasn’t going to make it in Klopp’s machine.

And at 20, we’re starting to doubt Glenn will do anything else for Gerrard’s.

The ex-Hibs loanee has talent, but hasn’t developed at the speed Stevie would have wanted – at his age he should be aggressively knocking on the door for a senior squad place on match day, and he couldn’t be further away from that right now.

Different players do develop at different speeds, but there’s only so long a parent team can wait before a player is a busted flush.

Hopefully Middleton figures it out in time to play a good role in the upcoming season or two, otherwise his time at Ibrox is likely to come to an end prematurely.

  1. Agree with article but i'd rather have Middleton in my team than Barker, it's evident the latter does not have the quality to be anywhere near our squad.
