Rangers’ reported interest in ‘fringe’ player might be confusing

As we alluded to earlier, both Rangers and Celtic are reportedly slugging it out for Feyenoord star Renato Tapia’s signature.

The midfielder would cost a nominal fee given he’s out of contract this summer, so it’s a lucrative signing to make.

But that’s in theory.

Bear in mind while Tapia’s CV is extremely impressive, especially for his age, he’s always been a fringe player at the De Kuip, never managing more than 16 league appearances in any season since joining from Willem II.

This season it’s been 14 outings, and 22 overall, which is fairly healthy, but there’s still a fair number of benchings. He’s far from a guaranteed starter.

So he’s been very in and out of the Dutch side’s XI regardless of who their manager has been, and only played one of the matches v Rangers (the one they lost, incidentally).

There is a talent here, given the number of appearances he has at 24 for his country (around 50), but we are certainly a little puzzled why he can’t and never could get his foot in the door firmly in Rotterdam.

But if he is on the club’s radar as a target, we’re certainly intrigued and ready to trust the interest.
