Warburton’s Rangers – Old Firm post-mortem

So it’s a couple of hours since the pain of yet another bad Old Firm defeat kicked in, and it’s yet another post-mortem to be carried out.

There’s no denying for all the good that Steven Gerrard has done for Rangers since arriving, just like all his predecessors, he’s ultimately come up short against Celtic.

Nothing summed up more the psychological block Rangers (and Alfredo) have to Celtic than the absurd Warburton-like huffing and puffing stats, but which, as usual, couldn’t blow the house down.

And the curious thing is we’re not even going to say we met an inspired Fraser Forster, because guess what, other than the stunning full-body save to deny Ryan Jack, NONE of his saves were particularly great.

It was a reflection of how blunt and insipid Rangers’ finishing was, how lacking in guile and quality the shots actually were, and for all the superior stats Rangers had, Celtic deserved the win.

Sure, they weren’t great, and even their goal was offside, but this Rangers could have played for years and not scored.

It just wasn’t good enough, and it’s evidently a mental blockade between our club and Celtic which obstructs us as much as anything.

The discipline went, the focus went, and over the piece, all the excellent attributes to have helped define an excellent season (Morelos’ finishing, Barisic’s crossing, Kent’s wingplay) were all weak and helpless.

Kent was completely done by Frimpong – the latter had the better of our most expensive signing. And while Barisic certainly got the better of Forrest overall, his crossing was some of the worst we’ve seen from him this season.

And don’t get us started on Morelos.

There’s just something about this fixture Rangers can’t seem to rise for – we might be the better team, we might have BEEN the better team, but how long are we going to keep use that as an excuse for losses or draws?

We’re on the right path overall, certainly – there’s much more to be hopeful for.

But this performance was far too Warburton-esque and has to count as yet another missed opportunity in the Journey.

There remains much work to do, unfortunately.

  1. Yes agreed still a lot of work to be done, this week has been a nightmare for us bears one to forget,we need to get our act together for thursday night

  2. Great performance and rubbish finishing. Rangers should have won by 3 or 4 – we know it, they know it, no debate. Only two points to make; Tav should not be the Captain (love him but he's not a leader) and Katic would have cleared the cross for the (off-side) goal and scored at least one from the many corners. Roll on Thursday.

  3. I agree way field's hear tav not a cabtan at all look at keeper after 10 mins shouting at player to go where to be what he wants fay his team look at jacko nearly fucked his game to make a tackle that commitment we don't get fay tav look at great leader from rangers in past bazza ec. Need people that shout bawl and fight for team can anyone ever say they have seen tav do that for us?

  4. Get a grip we ARE the better team and we were unlucky today within 2 minutes 2 big decisions cost us 1 we should have had a penalty then they go up the park and they score an offside goal..
    These things happen in football.
But as it seems this page has something against Gerrard and the team I'll ask a question who would you prefer was in charge and what players would you rather have? I'm sure many people on here thought 8 years ago Craig Whyte was the man they wanted. Let's just stop all the keyboard warrior shite and get behind the team again 55 is coming.
Stevie is here for 55 WATP

  5. ***Celtic fan, can you imagine what might have been achieved if Warburton have been given the time and money allowed to those that followed? I think if you had come up with the expectation of coming 2nd, instead of the massive 55 banner (Every right to dream) at ibrox for the draw vs Hamilton…..as a Celtic fan, i am scared to think of what Warbuton could have achieved with the money and patience Pedro and Gerrard have been given

    • Get a grip IN. We fell short today in the result only . In every other way we showed that we are a match for them. Totally gutted but don't tell me we didn't deserve to win today. And if we played them tomorrow I'd expect to beat them.

  6. I'm happy way Gerrard he's brought us on leaps and bounds we need a leader on that park that going to fight tooth and nail for us as says Jack/ mcgregor someone like that. That demands better on park and pushed a team is that not what a captain does?

  7. Ibrox noise you need to start backing team , all I see on here is negativity, yesterday we played them off the park , Alfredo has been brilliant for us all season , we as fans need to stick with this team , Celtic got lucky yesterday , their big ugly keeper had the game of his life , this team and this manager will win us the league if the keep playing like they have been all season ,

  8. I'm delighted what Gerrard has done at Rangers… McGregor could have put down a chair and had a drink and cigar as all he had to do was pick the ball out the net from a Dissallowed goal. Rangers were superb yesterday.. it could have been 5-6 if it wasn't for their keeper. Pen should've been re taken as he was off his line. Agree with a few on hear Tavistock isnt captain material. I've said it time and time again. Give Jack or McGregor captaincy. Time for VAR up here also.

  9. I'm getting fed up with all the negativity from Ibrox noise. You need to get behind the team, forget the Jinx, about Alfredo not scoring against them! his time will come. Stevie will make mistakes, and he did with the penalty taker but, surely you can see that we are getting there ,we just need to back the team please.

    • We are behind the team. Always are. It's why we're so harsh. If we posted buttercups and rainbows 24/7 no one would take us seriously. And indeed we've been accused of being a board mouthpiece whenever we've been strictly positive. We're balanced – we take both sides – a great result and we praise, a bad one and we criticise. It's just often the negativity is the only one people (want to) see.

    • When Tavernier missed his last penalty almost to a man everyone said give the job to Morelos. I can't believe what I now read with people saying Tavernier should've taken it. How many does he need to miss before he gets taken off the job.
