“Team that others fear”: history beckons for Stevie’s Rangers

Article by: Derek

From hedges and embarrassments to being top of a world class group. Yeah, we lost to Celtic, but now they are only winning because of luck, and tomorrow night we can win the match against Young Boys to qualify top of the Europa League group.

Last time out, Young Boys played a very aggressive, high-speed game. When they didn’t have the ball, they quickly formed circles around the opponent, and when they got the ball it was high speed runs, and the balls were sent quickly down the channels.

Up front their strikers quickly ran towards the defenders, to get one on ones across the park, and then they would launch the ball up front to try to force a series of 50:50 situations.

With enough 50:50 balls played up the park, their hope is to create a few goal scoring opportunities, and then score. Though effective in many games, as their results show against Porto and Feyenoord, the weakness is their high-speed runs eventually take their toll, and their game starts to slow down after about 40 minutes.

It also leaves them open to counter-attacks, and there is a substantial amount of luck involved in their play. Thursday, I expect to see Young Boys sticking to the same gameplan, as it seems to be their best bet to continue in the competition.

They do have good players, but they are not the same level as Feyenoord, who I rate the toughest team we have played against in this competition. However, their problem, as the results against Feyenoord and Porto show, manifests after their opponents get used to their game-style; they start to lose goals.

On Rangers’ side, there are a number of injuries, but if we can start with the same pace and aggression we showed against Celtic, we’ll finish top of this really tough group.

On Sunday we showed Celtic that Rangers are back. Now it’s finally time to wake up Europe. Rangers are now a team that others fear, and that feels so good.
