Rangers hero creates incredible history…

Ok, it won’t be a match Steven Davis will remember with great fondness, but overlooking the moment he’ll want to forget for the rest of his life the NI international created a piece of British history tonight with his 116th cap being a record in his position.

It was obviously a bitter sweet night for him to achieve such an illustrious number, with only Pat Jennings, Peter Shilton and Wayne Rooney being ahead of him overall for number of caps achieved, meaning Steven Davis is the most capped midfielder in the football history of the British isles, overtaking David Beckham.

Naturally all he’ll remember, sadly, is the penalty miss which may have cost his side a place at the Euros, and in truth there’s no one we’d have trusted more with that kick.

But if Davis can take comfort in the respect he has in the game, the love and admiration his club fans have for him, and hopefully his national fans too once they get over this on-pitch trauma, he’ll see what a slice of history he has.

No midfielder in British football history has more caps than him, and for that matter, no defender either.

Just Shilton, Jennings and Rooney. And he’ll certainly beat Rooney.

Chin up Davo.
