We’ve not really covered this, but we wanted to stop insulting the Rangers Colts by finally mentioning the staggering season Graeme Murty’s side have had in the Tunnock’s Cup.

We’ve had our differences with Murty over the years, but whatever we thought in the past, the kids, buoyed by the sensational Nathan Young-Coombes and Kai Kennedy, have made it to the semi finals against senior sides.

True, George Edmundson, Jon Flanagan, Jamie Barjonas and Serge Atakayi were in the quarter final v Wrexham, but still the side is mostly youth, and Murty and the team, overcoming the National League side, now face Championship side Inverness in the semis.

It’s a stunning achievement for a side of effectively kids to be in the semi finals flanked by senior sides. Raith Rovers v Partick is the other tie. Not really surprising of course how little this has been mentioned in the Scottish press either…

Of course, Rangers won this tournament in its Petrofac days, and it’s historically best-known as the Ramsden Cup till the jewellery store moved on, but now Tunnock’s have their name on it and Rangers Colts have their name tentatively on the trophy itself.

Senior lower division Rangers struggled to a win in this under Mark Warburton, having failed any of the previous three attempts, but Murty’s lads are doing the club proud.

Gives some idea really of the progress between now and four years ago that our kids are thumping their way to the semifinals, while our-then seniors struggled badly all those years ago.

Murty gets plenty of credit for this, he’s turned a creaking youth system round after the disaster of its non-progress under his previous boss Warburton, and it’s clearly producing quality.
