Dick Advocaat has made a big Feyenoord change that could BENEFIT Rangers...

As we discussed earlier, Rangers travel to Rotterdam this week to face Dick Advocaat’s Feyenoord, and one of the biggest threats the home side boasts is that of Netherlands international Steven Berghuis.

We’re not going to be so silly as to suggest Rangers should make a move for him Borna Barisic style (nicking an opponent in the UEL) – he’s 27 and a fixture for the Dutch national side, valued in the near-£20M region and one of the best players in the Eredivisie. Period.

His stats, for a winger, are extremely impressive:

In 21 appearances this season the former Watford man has a stunning 10 goals, and 6 assists.

It’s safe to say he’s certainly in form, and guess what:

We’re really, really glad he’s a right winger and will be facing Borna Barisic rather than James Tavernier.

The latter’s defensive frailties were exposed again by Hamilton at the weekend, and while the side had more than enough about it to compensate, Feyenoord and Steven Berghuis are a slight upgrade from Steve Davis.

We are therefore glad it’s Borna Barisic and his disciplined defending and attacking as opposed to Tavernier’s inconsiderate gung-ho approach which certainly can reap rewards, but against an opponent like Berghuis could be badly exploited too.

True, it wasn’t a huge issue in the first match (mainly because Berghuis was centrally-positioned in Stam's system), and despite Berghuis having a strong night, Rangers still came out top.

But this is the critical end of the tournament – every mistake costs double, triple, and we need our defence to be disciplined.

And now that Berghuis is playing in DA’s new attacking trident as an out and out RW, we’re certainly glad it’s down to Barisic to deal with his threat and not the man on the other side.

  1. I would rather we spend that kind of money on a striker.
