£100M January tug of war at Ibrox

With another brace last night in the cauldron of the Feyenoord Stadium, Alfredo Morelos’ value hiked even more, to levels that will smash the £25M for Kieran Tierney.

Steven Gerrard and Dave King have both said he will not leave in January, not even for £50M, but the reality is if that bid or higher arrives in Govan come the turn of the year, we can’t entirely see Rangers rejecting it.

Morelos wants to play in the PL – that is his long-term goal. Rangers may well secure Champions League football next season (Rangers and Celtic’s performances this season have edged close to a second UCL spot) but we just don’t know if that alone will be enough to top a megabucks offer from down south to persuade the Colombian to realise his dream.

The Champions League is lucrative as hell, it’s the joint top tournament in club football, alongside the EPL, but it doesn’t offer the rewards financially.

Prize money in Uefa’s premier tournament is barely half what it is down south, and while you are well rewarded for success on the continent, it can’t compete with the EPL.

And that’s why a mid-table team can offer what they pretty much want to or need to for a player of the quality of Alfredo Morelos.

Morelos this season has realised his potential – or at least a lot of it. He’s put away 99% of the bad side of his game, and developed to extraordinary levels the good side.

He is by far the best striker in the country, and his stats speak for themselves.

The question is now simply how much it will take to persuade Steven Gerrard and Rangers to part with him.

The manager has already done a sterling job of confirming £50M isn’t enough. And frankly in this market, it isn’t.

A free-scoring Colombian who scores at every level he plays and bullies defences?

With the best 5 years of his career ahead of him, a contract till 2023 and the form he’s now showing, Morelos could well reach close to the £100M mark.

As we pointed out yesterday, if Salzburg (in the ‘mighty’ Austrian Bundesliga) can demand a minimum of £50M for star man Erland Haaland who’s only 19 and has no caps for his country, a striker like Morelos will go for the earth.

A megabucks bidding war is set to attack Rangers come January, and we’ll see just how strong the club’s resolve is when the scary numbers start.

Interesting times lie ahead.
