“Attacking brilliance” – a 10 and three 9s for Rangers player ratings…

After Rangers went top of the table, things are feeling rather good at Ibrox Noise Towers.

Here we give our customary ratings on a day that may just have changed the face of Scottish football.

Might as well have brought a book and chair. Had one half save to make, and that was it. Borefest for a keeper who will be delighted with the clean sheet. N/A

Responded well to his horror night in Berne with a reasonable showing, but even then was still too advanced most of the time and appeared to have little interest in the defensive work. It must be his instruction, and he did make a very good assist for Connor Goldson. 6

As Alan McLaren put it, ‘a centre back with an overlapping run. Not for me, don’t like that one.’. We’re still not convinced by him, and a day he wasn’t tested and scored a goal doesn’t really change that. He was ok, and that’s about all we can say. 6

Wasn’t tested heavily either but was very neat on the ball, and used it efficiently – did have some tidying up to do and did so cleanly indeed. He’ll be happy with this display and it’s given SG another serious defensive option. 7

Stellar goal, fantastic defensive tracking, dogged defending and all-round midfield and attacking brilliance from the Croat who has finally woken up in our shirt. We’re starting to love this guy. 9

A very good performance this – didn’t waste much, worked hard, got lots of the ball and was given a touch of licence to advance more. And, as we said, looked all the better for it. Solid. 7

Other than two stray passes in a row, this was a return to form for Davis who conducted the orchestra with ease throughout. He was the momentum, the metronome in a match Rangers’ midfield was in easy street for and he nailed two assists while he was at it. 8

Not quite as heavily involved as we’ve seen him in the past, but what he did he did very well. Looked like he maybe might have been playing within himself, but was efficient and neat with his use of the ball. 7

Fractionally better than lately, but it’s not saying much – he still just runs at opponents and either gets fouled or little comes of the final ball. He’s just a very meh player. 5

Striking masterclass from the wee man who should have had four, this was just movement, clinical finishing and turning of the top order. A real stroll for a player who’s in talks for a permanent deal. 10

Continued his Aberdeen match form and was excellent – his assist for Defoe’s opener was sublime, and hey he even made Kris Commons look vindicated by his creative spark. This was an excellent display from the Scot, and he’s played himself into first-team regular contention with it. He can be delighted with how he played. 9

Absolutely creaming himself to get on, he took his chance and worked hard to get lots of the ball. A decent cameo from a player desperate to get back in the picture. 6

Deployed in midfield, the American took his chance well too, looking clean, crisp, efficient and clearly eager to get more minutes. It was all wrapped up by then, ditto Murphy, of course, but he did his chances no harm with this outing. 6

Defoe’s near assist for his ‘offside’ goal was a sign of the relationship these two could have, but for his own worth Morelos didn’t really have much time to do much. 5

Gerrard continued with the beleaguered Goldson, Tavernier and Ojo, and left out Katic, none of which went down terribly well with the majority, but it couldn’t have worked out better and a match which was a previous banana skin for this manager ended up a stroll. The tactics were sharp, the XI was hungry, and the early goal was a statement of intent. The team really played for the manager, even if the goalmouth action in the first half was a little lacking in intensity. 9

  1. Good performance, great result and fantastic to be top of the league just weeks after the doom and gloom of our Ibrox defeat. And great to see Jamie Murphy come off the bench looking sharp and hungry. I believe a Jamie Murphy close to his best would be a real asset to our squad. Edmundson was a bonus too.

  2. Something to be happy about at last, as we go top. Defoe, is a consummate professional. brought in to do a job. In my opinion, he has added a lot of value. Glad things are improving for Borna. Good performances all round, to be fair. Happy days!
