“Stand alone” – two Rangers men are a class above…

There’s something subtle that stood out last night, and may have stood out since the split last season indeed.

Rangers’ overall best two performers, consistently, and of the mental strength needed have been Allan McGregor and Steven Davis.

Others have shone too, such as Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Jack and Niko Katic, but those two have just kept on keeping on.

And last night, they were by a distance Rangers’ best two performers again.

Why? Because they’re true Rangers champions.

McGregor and Davis know what it takes at this club, and they’re the two players we have who have been there, done it, and have won.

If we look at the starting team last night, bar McGregor and Davis very few of the starting XI know what it’s like to win things at a high level, particularly at a club of the gravity of Rangers. Jack won the league cup with Aberdeen, Helander a few gongs back in Sweden, and Morelos won the league with HJK among others, but in terms of the high-pressure high-octane nature of the SPL, and the demands of doing it at Rangers, McGregor and Davis stand out alone as players we really can trust and rely on to deliver when the chips are down.

Because the True Ranger triumphs in the face of adversity, and grinds out the win – Davis was exceptional last night, ditto McGregor, and both showed leadership to drag Rangers over the line on a night the side played essentially atrociously.

And their captaincy, leadership, experience and knowledge are going to be critical this season.

There are other leaders, of course, but none know what it takes at this club – many are understanding, but none aside these two have experienced it.

And that is absolutely priceless going forward.

    • I had high hopes for Helander (or is it Helmander) after the Feyenoord match but he had an absolute shocker. Possibly even worse than anything Worrall produced. Prepared to allow him a bad night at the office but I'm watching.
