Picking Rangers’ ultimate XI – did your favourite make it?

It’s been quite a long time since we did a piece like this, and given the amount of work done in the transfer market this summer it certainly seems like the right time to revisit it.

What is, categorically, unequivocally Rangers’ strongest XI?

We’ll slightly ignore formation as despite it being a 4-3-3 on paper it doesn’t exactly behave like one, but nevertheless the players will be vaguely structured in that way regardless.

So, without further ado:

In goal – Allan McGregor. Easy. He’s the best goalkeeper this country has produced since Andy Goram. A remarkable stopper.

Back four gets interesting:

The fullbacks are now starting to emerge clearly – James Tavernier is a no-brainer on the right, but on the left Borna Barisic is starting to show what he’s all about, and he’s slowly winning us over.

The two between them is a further area of intrigue – some fans consider Connor Goldson our finest CB, but we’d have to disagree on current form and suggest Nikola Katic and Filip Helander are theoretically Rangers’ best two. But then George Edmundson has barely been given a chance…

In midfield it gets easier:

Steven Davis sits and pulls strings. He’s by far the best choice in the 6 slot. But in front of him is a touch more tricky – Joe Aribo is yet to set the league alight, Glen Kamara hasn’t had the strongest season, and Scott Arfield hasn’t been used this season in that slot at all bar once. Greg Docherty appears to be out of the picture as well. In front of that man though Ryan Jack selects himself.

Up front, again we have mostly easy:

Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos are easily Rangers’ most potent attackers, and they pick themselves. But who gets the other wing? Is it Scott Arfield who was so monumentally strong there in the split but hasn’t maybe quite scaled those heights this term? Is it Sheyi Ojo who scores a few and wins fouls but is maybe guilty of selfishness and hasn’t won everyone over? Is it right-footed Jordan Jones who had such a great start to his Ibrox career but might not be Steven Gerrard’s favourite player and is better known as a LW anyway?

So, with all that said, our pick for Rangers’ strongest XI these days:

McGregor; Tavernier, Katic, Helander, Barisic; Davis, Arfield, Jack; Jones, Morelos, Kent

We would put Scott Arfield back into the engine room – his basic position is central midfield, and he hasn’t quite nailed the RW slot this season so strongly. And we’d really like to see Jones tried on the right side, as it’s our belief he and Kent are overall our strongest wingers.

Would you be happy with this XI as Rangers’ best?
