“I was surprised…” – pundit admits shock over big Gerrard decision

Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist has admitted his ‘surprise’ over Steven Gerrard’s Old Firm formation and selection.

Speaking on BT Sport, the former Rangers striker and boss was mostly complimentary about Gerrard’s second season so far at Ibrox, but like everyone else struggled to rationalise that bizarre team sheet to face Celtic.

He said:

“I was surprised by his selection to face Celtic, I must admit. I couldn’t quite understand the decision to play with five central midfielders.”

Rangers, it must be said, have recovered quite well from that awful afternoon, with straight wins, but while we ultimately did (sort of) get Ryan Kent out of it, ultimately we will never quite know what Stevie was doing that day with that lineup.

And that applies to the best of us too.

  1. McAllister is meant to be his right hand man. Could he not have said something? Or else, what's an assistant, good for?
