Two Rangers players will be absolutely devastated by developments…

We’re still on the topic of Ryan Kent, despite a few weeks ago hoping never to talk about him again, because there are significant implications if the stories about his returning to Ibrox are true. If you believe everything you read, he’s downed tools at Anfield, and is not only wanting out, but is in Glasgow as we speak working on the deal to move back to Rangers.

Who knows the actual truth?

But what it does spell is major ramifications for summer signing Brandon Barker who was specifically plucked from the Etihad on grounds of the Kent deal being completely dead.

The 22-year old left winger was brought north for a fee of £250,000 with a view to giving quality depth on the left in light of the Kent deal going south, but not only has the move for the Liverpool winger switched back on, but Barker has been taken out of the Europa League squad for tomorrow night’s first leg with Legia.

Barker, right now, must be wondering what on earth is happening with him.

We were never hugely in favour or indeed against the signing – we provided advantages and disadvantages of his capture, and one disadvantage was his injury history.

If he’s had to withdraw through injury, that rather, sadly, vindicates our caution over that aspect of signing him, and even more curiously instead of another left winger replacing him in Jamie Murphy, his space has been given to Swedish stopper Filip Helander.

That does, in some respects, point to a tactical decision, but surely this squad had been planned precisely and the only reason to make late changes is injury-related?

Nevertheless, Barker won’t be thrilled with either dropping out, or the Kent story resurfacing, and Jamie Murphy will be gutted he didn’t replace Barker.

Helander, however, will be delighted to be flying to Poland after all…

  1. It tells me there may be a doubt with one of goldson, katic or edmundson for the first leg. He lander needed for cover. Which makes barker expendable
