Stunning Stevie Rangers stat is history in the making….

With a comfortable (ok, storming) win over Hibs on Sunday, Steven Gerrard achieved something no Rangers manager has in the SPL since 2010 – he won his opening two SPL fixtures.

Yes, not since early 2010 and the management of Walter Smith have Rangers managed to open their SPL account for the season with two wins, and that obviously includes 11/12, 16/17, 17/18 and 18/19.

Not only that, but with 8 goals into the bargain, it’s the highest opening two match tally for goals scored since… possibly ever. We looked and as far back as records seem to go it’s certainly unmatched inside the past 20 years. Six was the best we could do otherwise.

And of course it can’t be forgotten that these incredible stats have been achieved against two of the sides to give Rangers the biggest headaches in the past five years – Killie, especially on their own patch, and Hibs.

So not only have Rangers broken a huge duck here, in managing to get off to the best possible start in defiance of Celtic’s attempt at 9IAR, but they’ve done it by scoring a record number of goals for a Rangers side.

Celtic, on the other hand, gubbed a paltry St Johnstone and Motherwell, two of the least-fancied sides in the SPL, to get their 12 goals. Fair enough – you can only beat what’s in front of you – but for Rangers to near-match them against sides of much higher calibre says a lot about the progress we’re continuing to see under Stevie G.

Best start to a league season since promotion? Yes.

Best start to a league season since 2010? Yes.

Most goals scored in the opening two in… forever? Absolutely.

Let’s go.
