Records tumble as another stunning new stat sets Rangers apart

Let’s get straight to the point. Yes, we all care who we might get matched up with today, but I think every Gers fan is now asking who else has qualified like this twice in a row?

Looking through the records for the last 5 Europa League seasons, since 2015 only a measly 11 teams have successfully made the long journey from the first qualifying round to the group stages.

So, it is a huge task to do it twice.

But surprisingly, three teams have qualified two times, and it’s even more surprising that all of them similarly did it twice in a row.

These three clubs are the mighty Glasgow Rangers who did the double last night of course, Maccabi Tel Aviv who graduated twice in 2016 and 2017, and Gabala of Azerbaijan in 2015 and 2016.

To get some idea of how significant an achievement this is, bear this in mind; a staggering 94 teams started in the first round this year.

Malmö FF were ranked third ‘seed’ at the first round with a coefficient of 20.0, and Rangers were ranked 15th.

This means many teams with coefficients way above Rangers were all knocked out of the competition.

It is safe to say Rangers were the surprise team last year, and with a little bit more self-belief amongst the players who just arrived this year, there is really no reason why Rangers cannot progress further.

Who knows, perhaps this is the season we can truly say Rangers are back?

I know it's a lot to ask for, Santa, but just one more win to see out the summer please.
