Rangers make big move for £5M striker – reports

With today’s breaking news that Rangers have joined the race for Senegal’s hot-form striker Moussa Konate, it marks a genuinely useful player that has the ability to sincerely enhance Rangers’ striking options.

The 26-year old plies his trade in France, and managed a very respectable 7 goals in 27 appearances last season, with 13 in 33 the previous campaign.

Described as a big and sturdy forward man, albeit a slightly scrappy one and not the most refined, the 6ft attacker is said to have a market value of around £5M, and has two years left on his deal with his current club Amiens.

It’s a credible link for Stevie, a big physical powerhouse of a unit, who can stand the ball up and give his team mates space – the fact he can score healthy numbers in a league as strong as France bodes well, but equally in slightly more negative news he only got one in Italy over the course of a season and 25 outings for Genoa – although he mostly played there as a winger.

Rangers do need this kind of player – the big sturdy brick up front who has the physical presence to operate alone – but he doesn’t really have a particularly strong reputation for aerial dominance which is slightly concerning. What is more promising is his record for his country – an outstanding 12 in 32 is not to be sniffed at for a player who isn’t regarded as an out-and-out striker.

And maybe that fact, that he’s not been played purely as a target man, is another negative, given that’s what Rangers need.

But if we are looking at him, Stevie might be focused on his attributes rather than his established positions. And in his absolute defence, his most productive season was the one before last where he nailed that 13 in 33 as a pure striker.

At 26 he has plenty of his best years ahead, and at £5M, he won’t be cheap – but time is definitely running out to get the right third striker.

Perhaps Konate is him.

  1. Hard to imagine that Rangers are going to spend £5m on a third striker. It would seem more likely that he might be one SG is watching, as a possible replacement if Morelos gets sold. But here's hoping that no-one will come in with a big enough bid to tempt Rangers to sell Morelos.

  2. Have to agree with alanc. If we had that kind of spending for a benchwarmer, Kent would be here.
Would far rather keep Morelos, this guy would not replace him. Think and hope this is a story to nothing

  3. If we qualify for Euopra league require 1 more striker to cover injuries + suspensions. I Reckon we will get Kent in January.

  4. Got to disagree about his stats. 7 goals in 27 games, i.e. a goal every 4 games, is someway short of respectable in my opinion. Big, sturdy, scrappy and unrefined does not sound like a £5m player to me. Sounds more like Umar Sadiq.
