Former Rangers manager delivers verdict on defence…

Regulars will have seen our piece recently on Ally McCoist, and the sacrifices he made in 2012. Speaking on BT Sport, back to the actual football, he expressed that the defence had done ‘ok’ v East Fife, nothing amazing but fine, and we had a quick catch up with the man himself afterwards to ask what he considers our best defence overall.

Despite George Edmundson’s impressive pre-season, and Filip Helander’s CV and potential, Ally was totally steadfast:

“By a mile Goldson and Katic.”

It does seem this duo is winning everyone over, after a sticky spell last season when the wavelength wasn’t quite there and even this season at the start when the two didn’t entirely connect.

The past few matches, especially v the Danes, have seen a hike in their partnership, and having played alongside Gough, Butcher and Brown, Super clearly knows what makes a good defender.

Don’t also forget he was able to sign quality like Bocanegra and Goian before it all went south, so he’s certainly been responsible for the acquisition of Rangers standard stoppers.

And he clearly thinks, like the rest of us, that Katic and Goldson are the pair for the foreseeable future.
