Stevie G reveals true reason for big squad omission….

Steven Gerrard confirmed what we brought to you yesterday on the site, and revealed Daniel Candeias has indeed played his last match for Rangers as the Portuguese winger was omitted for the friendly for Blackburn to facilitate his switch to Turkish new boys Genclerbirligi.

The 31-year old winger travelled to Turkey instead to continue negotiations and short of failing to come to agreement on personal terms or failing a medical (both nigh-on impossible), the former Benfica man will be sold within a matter of days if not sooner.

Gerrard said:

“He’s gone over to have the discussions and do whatever else you do when you move clubs but I haven’t got an update.”

The truth is Gerrard sealed Candeias’ fate by omitting him from that infamous Europa League squad.

He spoke about numbers but yet included Scott Arfield, who wasn’t available for around 75% of the entire tie, and Andy Firth, who was never involved at all – so evidently he was a squad player to Gerrard and simply not good enough to command a first-team starting place regularly.

In Candeias’ defence, he gave the shirt all he had, and never hid in matches – he was also one of the most technically gifted players at the club – some in game moments such as ‘that’ assist for Morelos in the Europa League last season plus plenty of training ground videos not to mention his touch and finish v Marseille were all unshakable evidence of this.

But the reality is in-game he just didn’t quite have ‘it’ – the X Factor to justify his place every match, and he confirmed to Stevie he wasn’t willing to work to earn that shirt; that he should have it by right.

And that would have very much upset the manager who doesn’t want to give a single place without the player grafting to deserve it.

So, Candeias will now move onto pastures new and in truth with the talent Stevie now has in the wings, it’s not as much of a loss as it could have been. Although, in others, it’s colossal.

More on that later…

  1. It seems that Candeias, like Hardie last week, has gone for an undisclosed fee. That usually means the selling club didn't get enough or the buying club paid too much. Since I see no reason why the Turkish side would overpay it leaves me to assume that we sold cheaply. The lack of clarity on these fees concerns me especially with potentially big transfers for Morelos and/or Tavernier round the corner. We were promised players would be sold at new prices not old prices. How do we know if the fees aren't disclosed?

  2. McKay Sold – 500k
    Hardie Sold – 150k
    Candeias Sold – £250k

    When Realistically should have got…
    McKay – £1.5-2mill
    Hardie – £500-600k
    Candeias – £500-600k
