Rangers man has just caused a meltdown in Scottish football…

There’s been a lot of talk recently about Sheyi Ojo’s proclamation that Rangers are the best team in Scotland. Specifically, outrage over these comments and the presumption that goes with them.

Was Ojo right to say what he did? Or did he go too far and show arrogance?

Let’s look at what he said, when asked if impressed by any other side in the SPL:

“Not really, to be honest. I think Rangers are the best team in the league. It is just about us proving we are the best team and doing really well this season. It’s one of the reasons why I came here. I want to be part of a winning team and I think Rangers, this season, can do that. It’s just about us focusing on every game and in training. All the new players are focused on the new system the gaffer wants and taking it game by game. I think the most important thing, and the gaffer has told us this, is just to focus on ourselves. I think the difference last season was, I think, six to nine points. It proved we’re pretty close to Celtic. It’s just about concentrating on ourselves and then we’ll be able to make up those fine margins.”

In truth, the statement about thinking Rangers are the best team seems clumsy, because none of the rest appears to back it up. He even admits Rangers were slightly inferior to Celtic and this upcoming campaign is about closing that gap and proving on the pitch that we are a match for them.

But, of course, by simply uttering that comment, he has made a slight rod for his own back – only a fool would truly believe, right now, that Rangers are the best team in Scotland. What sensible observers would argue is that Steven Gerrard has significantly improved his side, and appears to be on the right path – even we made a strong case that our midfield is arguably the best in the country with only Celtic’s a fair match for it.

But we wouldn’t go further than that.

What we would say is the line we’ve trotted out time and time again – that regardless of which team actually is ‘better’, Rangers simply have to win the league this year to stop 9IAR. In a poll a month or two ago, our readers voted in their swathes that winning the league was essential, and more essential than usual.

If Rangers do manage it this season, and stop 9IAR, the fullest extent of Ojo’s comments will have been vindicated. But it really is just one small slightly silly sentence that he maybe could have worded better, which is the only thing in the above passage which really appears a little misguided.

Of course, the counter argument is that Celtic, under Neil Lennon, have been pretty shoddy at best. Unconvincing and seemingly taking steps backwards this summer – not least of all by choosing that particular manager. So there is certainly an opening for Rangers. For sure.

But it would be folly to say more than that at this point. They’ve won 8IAR – you don’t fluke it eight times in a row.

But hopefully this season Ojo’s assertion is proven true and we’re celebrating a sensational 55.

  1. It screams of Gerrards "a class above Aberdeen" when we drew with them at Pittodrie, and we all know how that panned out!!
When will our players learn that other teams feed off criticism and big statements and turn it into motivation to beat us.
Ojo is an utter fool to say that. He hasn't kicked a ball in the SPFL and already he has made himself a target man already. All new players should be briefed not to give such statements to the press to attempt to impress the Rangers fans. We have heard it all before Ojo, just you start putting results where your mouth is.
Talk is cheap, and I am sick of our own players giving the opposition more motivation to beat us. Ojo is in for a rude awakening this season, it's not as easy as he seems to thinks. I don't mind confidence, but that is just sheer arrogance. He better deliver on Sunday or the press will eat him alive!!!

    • Can't agree more …probably couldn't name 6 teams on the league he's about to play in ..nothing to gain from the comment

  2. He shouldn't have said it but he's right. We ARE the best team in Scotland. We WERE the best team last year. I don't care if they won the treble – they were incredibly lucky at times and we got no luck whatsoever. If the luck balances out this season we will be looking at 55 in May.

    • Yea and if your granny had ball and all that – listen the best team is the one on top of the league when all the matches are done. Only an idiot would argue that the team that finshed 9 points off the winners, and couldn't make it to a cup final, was the best team in the league. So you sir are an idiot!

    • Fulham John if we are the best team in The league, why did the manky mob win the treble again.
Every season we have some English fool , coming up and making these same comments and we have to listen to the mob from the east laughing at us when we win F**k all.
Hopefully we will be a lot better than last season but we need to wait and see.

  3. Talk is cheap but was it not Souness who said 'show me a loser and I will show you a loser'? I don't mind players talking us up and trashing the opposition as long as they are able to show up in the games that matter. We have been trashed non stop for years so lets big it up this season and go for it!

  4. He should believe we are the best team in Scotland after all we do .What kind of signing would he be if he said he was happy that he was joining the second best team in Scotland.
By the way Rangers were a class above Aberdeen in that game and did with 10 men for most of the game.We probably have never replicated that football against them since.

  5. He is a young lad just arrived in the Goldfish bowl of Glasgow football, a mistake definitely but maybe also a valuable lesson about the size of the institution he is playing 4 and hopefully it has a positive effect on him.

  6. The boy can say what he likes imo. Arrogance is a trait of all the best players and the BOAT, whether its messi or Ronaldo. As long as he has the ability to back up his statement… Ultimately rangers were a match for celtic last season We were better across the 4 old firm games. Celtic luckily scraped 2 of them. Now its all about believing we're better (the players not us) time to get rid of players who didnt genuinely believe wed win the league!!! The quality os there

  7. Septic had alot of luck last season not to mention getting by with a little help from their friends adding on 4 or 5 minutes etc when drawing from nowhere when really it should have only been one! Even if that (for some reason 90 min games don't exist anymore. It's like part of the game now is at least one minute added on, more usually 2 even if nothing happened at all to delay the match) if the right amount of time had been played it would have ended in draws. Their players also getting away with things that other teams would have seen reds and we had hell of a lot of bad luck and self inflicted damage. If we sort that out and get some good luck for a change and they get bad luck then we will definitely be the better team.

    • 1 minute added on, usually 2. You add 30 seconds per sub, of which there can be six. When did you last watch a match where there no substitutions? I'm not saying they don't cheat, because I think they do, but nonsense like that only weakens the argument. Focus on the authorities decisions off the pitch and that's where there is actual evidence and where the real harm is done.

  8. This is for real we were raped sent to bottom rung the scum celtic had no completion to come back from where we were no other club could do this, this season I stake my life Glasgow Rangers back where we belong top tree…
