“Not a terribly effective one – 6”, “Absolute class – 9” – Rangers UEL match ratings….

After what was an ultimately comfortable night for Rangers in Gibraltar, Ibrox Noise has some ratings of the various personnel on the day. Who stood out? Who didn’t? Here’s our numbers, how many do you agree with?

McGregor:

Literally zero to do. Can’t rate him any more than we could Alnwick v Oxford. NA

Tavernier:

An energetic enough display but not a terribly effective one – Tavernier looks like he isn’t quite up to speed yet after the summer break and rarely managed a cross in this match. Had no Candeias to link up with either and there’s no understanding yet with Ojo (or Jones). 6

Goldson:

Hardly stood out by sitting deep and just letting the side in front have the ball. Did nothing wrong, apart from one howling ‘miss’. Quiet afternoon. 6

Barisic:

We’re starting to learn what kind of a FB Barisic is. He will not give Tavernier’s dynamic lung-bursting dribbles, but instead a more considered and ‘low-key’ approach – still has improving to do, but his defending was good in this one (gaining applause from the management) and his support play excellent – fine assist for Jack’s opener. His free kick goal was sublime. 8

Katic:

Got forward a LOT and helped midfield dominate this match – was caught out once at the back but that aside, he can be happy with his work. 7

Kamara:

One lazy pass given away (has a bad habit of this in front of his own box) aside, a composed, mature, and elegant display showing power, energy and maturity. Keep this up he’ll attract serious suitors. 8

Davis:

A smooth show from the NI man who played in a more advanced role, swapping position with Kamara a lot as well, and just generally keeping midfield organised and moving. Not a lot of those long passes but barely wasted a pass. 8

Jack:

A surprise start for some, including us, but he had a great afternoon. Scored twice, kind of, and showed why the arrival of Aribo and return of Docherty shouldn’t mean the end of him. Worked hard not to be forgotten and it succeeded. 8

Jones:

Took him a while to get into this – tried too hard to stand out and struggled a little in failing to do so, but grew into it and became a major threat to St Joseph’s. He’ll get better, but plenty to work with here. 7

Ojo:

Absolute class – Ojo only got better than his cameo v Oxford. Instant impact, stunning goal, and already he looks a player we’d love to keep. He’s had by a distance the biggest impact of all the new arrivals. 9

Defoe:

Used his body well, and was canny in the box, but also showed that new petulant side and picked up a reckless yellow card. Didn’t manage to get on the score sheet. He’s been better and worse. 6

Steven Gerrard:

Went more or less with the side we’d predicted and he’ll be so happy with a 0-4 win away on a potential banana skin. His side showed up, even if the first half was slow, and this appeared a group of players wanting their places in his side. He’ll be happy with how they kept their shape and never lost focus. 8

  1. Solid enough second half but the first half was very pedestrian. Falling into old habits with too many pointless passes across the back four and in front of their defence. I know it's early days but I was hoping to see us getting the ball forward quicker with a bit more dynamism in the last third.
Ojo looks like he'll get 15-20 goals for us this season.
Defoe looks lost when not putting the ball in the net.
Katic first half lapse at the back post is very concerning. It just shouldn't happen and would be punished by most teams we come across.
Kamara's careless pass happens too often and must be stamped out.
Another appearance from Aribo with no sign of any attacking prowess but still early days.

    • Agreed on Aribo – it is of course very early but we're not yet impressed by him. We're sure that'll significantly change. And we didn't really bother rating the subs otherwise as the damage had already been done.

  2. This was a team without Arfield, Kent and Morelos compared to last season. Squad looks a lot stronger heres hoping we get Kent back as well. We are in a very good place imo this time last year we struggled against Shkupi. The players will only get better including Aribo but for me my midfield 3 this season will be Kamara Davis and Jack as it was the best trio last season. Then I would have Arfield with a combo of Ojo/Hastie/Defoe/Morelos/Jones/Murphy. Aribo, Docherty, Stewart there to push. Cannot wait for it all to unfold. Still another 3 to come in CB from Slavia Prague 2.5 million about to be confirmed.

    • After all the fuss getting Aribo in I don't see him not playing. I think Jack will miss out as I see Davis, Kamara, Arfield and Aribo ahead of him. That all means bad news for Docherty too and is the reason why McCrorie was shipped out.

  3. I think we should just forget about Kent . We are well covered and bringing him back would only disrupt what looks like a happy squad given he might have to be assured of game time .
