“Limited by his own ability” – Rangers man’s Ibrox career comes to a close…

We’ll cover tonight’s stunning win over St Joseph’s in more detail tomorrow, but after a number of fans mocked the story about Daniel Candeias and suggested the wider fanbase had not learned from the past and ‘dodgy Turkish websites’, Steven Gerrard confirmed what we knew and the Portuguese was indeed negotiating a move to Turkey.

In truth, and we mean this with no disrespect, but this is a player we’re glad to see leave.

The man has shown Rangers only respect and dignity, so this is nothing personal – but ever since Kieran Tierney destroyed him in the Old Firm on his debut in that fixture, we never felt this was a player who would be good enough for our club long term.

It’s very odd on Ibrox Noise – we’ve had heavy criticism for too many plaudits for the former Benfica man, but he was far from a site favourite – quite the opposite in fact. We just tried to credit him for performances where they were due. And in his defence, he did produce a lot of very decent displays, but for us, he was a symptom of the Pedro disaster – a player limited by his own ability and who had had a journeyman career (aged 31 and his career is a litany of loans and brief stints at various mediocre teams).

Lest we forget, Daniel Candeias only managed two assists and a goal in all 14 UEL appearances as a Rangers player. That’s just not good enough in his position.

He was an honest player who gave everything in our shirt, and we certainly have no bad word to say about his attitude.

He put in a shift and worked extremely hard. But compare his numbers with his old mate James Tavernier in the UEL – the captain, from right back, managed 3 goals and 5 assists in the same number of appearances as the Portuguese – that tells its own story.

So, we can honestly say, as much as we don’t have a bad word to say about him personally, and professionally, we are happy to be moving on from him. The only Pedro remnants now at the club are Morelos and Jack – the former is subject to intense speculation as it stands and Jack has truly earned his place in the team.

But Candeias is free to leave – and Gerrard’s polite comments about being reluctant to let him go are just that – platitudes. He left him out the UEL squad for a reason.

We say to Candeias – good luck, and we wish you well in your future career.

  1. For my part i'd just like to wish our departing winger daniel candeias
all the very best of luck,in the continuation of his career in turkey. At times this Portuguese winger was simply superb for us and he did score against the other mob,
which of course will be fondly remembered,by all us bears.Candeias loved playing for us and truly loved our club. His workrate for a winger was phenomenal and consistency and his final ball at times, was the only thing that let him down. All in all he was a good player for us.Tav and him had a fantastic understanding and fantastic relationship, down or right hand side.He covered tav's forward runs, with his magnificent workrate and endeavour.Good luck daniel candeias and thanks for everything you did while you played for the most successful football club in the planet.

  2. Entirely agree IN. Candeias is an honest wee player but the club has simply outgrown him. I know he remains popular with many fans but we need to move on in quality. His goal against Marseille confirmed that he does indeed have quality but he never brought it often enough.
Oddly, and perhaps controversially, I used to feel the same about Nacho Novo even though he delivered on the big stage many times.

  3. Seems like Danny fears competition for a place this season to the extent it would be better to go elsewhere. That being the case I agree with him. Halliday, Docherty played a cup final display tonight. There was the difference with Danny's attitude. Edmondson for me was sensational. Future Rangers captain? Central defender or full back, this guy is made for Rangers.

  4. Loved his effort, his commitment, his running, the cover for Tav and above all the goal he made for Morelos.
BUT, as you say, his stats were not good enough. With a front 3, we need a minimum of 10 goals from each winger. He was nowhere near that. So go with our thanks, our blessing and our best wishes.
Just hope Hastie steps up quickly to push Ojo, because we do not have a proven performer there now unless it's Arfield.

  5. Played for the shirt! Worked his arse off every game! Yes his UEL stats aren't great, but orrect me if I'm wrong but was he not joint top or there about in the SPFL for assists the season before last (Pedro/Murty)? I don't completely agree with your opinion on the player, however I do agree now is the time to move him on due to his age & influx of younger wide players like Jones, Ojo & Hastie! All the best Daniel….

  6. Off topic I know but what is you're thoughts on Jake Hastie last night? For me I know he's only young but so is mcpake yet mcpake looked good when he came 3 year younger than Hastie. Hastie for me needs to go out on loan. He gave the ball away on numerous occasions last night. Trying to dribble with the ball yet I can dribble better. He was looking control of the ball when trying to dribble and stumbling by the opposing player in rare occasion he got by his man. He also didn't have the vision to spot Alfie free on the right for what would have been an easy chance to score. Early days I know but not impressed on last night's showing.

    • Give the young guy a break. Everything around him is a new experience and SG knows it better than anyone. He will have learned more from last night than the previous three years. The manager must believe in him and patience is required.
