Dropped? The 10 men ‘axed’ by Rangers

While we have discussed Ryan Jack and Alfredo Morelos’ absences from the win over TNS, they weren’t the only players who failed to get any minutes against the Welsh side.

Ibrox Noise takes you through all the relevant players who did not feature against the Champions League hopefuls, and any conclusions we might be able to bring from that.

Jak Alnwick and Wes Foderingham:

Neither keeper was deployed in this one, having both had outings against Mansfield. Instead McGregor played 75 minutes before giving the shirt to Andy Firth. We don’t get the impression either Alnwick or Wes are particularly favoured by the manager.

Ryan Jack:

This was an odd one. Just a rest? Or is there more to Jack’s absence from this friendly?

Jamie Barjonas:

Forever in loan hell, Barjonas was solid against Mansfield but was another to find himself on the outside for the step up in class in facing TNS.

Josh McPake:

More on him later, but the rising star of Auchenhowie, having had such an excellent appearance v Mansfield, was not used in this one.

Glenn Middleton:

His move to Doncaster seems to have fallen through entirely, and he has not featured in either friendly at all so far. His Rangers career is currently in desperate limbo.

Alfredo Morelos:

A possible move south appears on the cards. Or he just got a rest, not that he exactly needed one. And then there’s that shirt mystery…

Lewis Mayo, Dapo Mebude, Stephen Kelly:

The youths who did rather well in Portugal were out in force v Mansfield but Gerrard spared them this one.

Gerrard is clearly managing minutes in certain cases, but in others it seems to be out of his hands. We’ll see how those develop over the coming days and weeks.

  1. look at the official website and morelos, jack and co are all sitting on the sidelines behind Gerrard.

    • We saw that image and never claimed Jack wasn’t there, just that he wasn’t involved. As for Morelos, again, without seeing his face it’s hard to tell.
