The eight-man Rangers cut of who didn't make it to Portugal

With Steven Davis and Nikola Katic joining the fun in Portugal after extended breaks/duties with their countries, only Scott Arfield remains of the expected arrivals at Rangers’ training camp to still appear as soon as Canada’s work in the Gold Cup is complete (which could take a while yet, Canada still healthy in the quarter finals against the ‘might’ of Haiti).

So, with pretty much everyone who’s supposed to be there now arrived, let’s have a blow-by-blow summary of who didn’t make it, and why.

Graham Dorrans:

Been told by Gerrard to seek a new club – this will likely be a ‘mutual consent’ severance payoff. The reasons are really rather obvious.

Joe Dodoo:

Utterly surplus – we did have high hopes for this lad but it didn’t work out and he’s one Stevie wants to cut ties with.

Jordan Rossiter:

After a number of wildly inaccurate reports on his being granted leave, Rossiter is just another one told to remain home and seek new employment.

Eros Grezda:

Disaster of a signing, and the international debacle with his country didn’t help. Was told to stay at home, and is waiting on a new club picking him up.

Glenn Middleton:

Was left behind to deal with a loan switch to Doncaster but it’s fallen through after Grant McCann and the Rovers parted company. Is currently in a bit of limbo – and waiting for another club to take him on for a season, we would imagine.

Jason Holt:

Expected to thrash out a deal to leave and join QPR, just isn’t in Gerrard’s plans going forward.

Eduardo Herrera:

Fans forget this guy is STILL on our payroll – his Rangers career is deader than a-line flares with pockets in the knees but he’s still our player! His loan at Necaxa ended so now we require to cut him loose. Somehow.

Ryan Hardie:

A few eyebrows were raised at this lad’s exclusion from the trip to Portugal, especially given our threadbare options up top and his impressive season at Livi, but he’s another who stayed home and appears to be outwith Stevie’s plans going forward.

Eight players that Steven Gerrard isn’t seemingly interested in. He’s clearly trying to cut the dead wood away, and we must admit the vast majority of these won’t be sorely missed.

  1. Combine all their wages to pay Martin Skrtels wages.
