Tavernier replacement not who it should be? Developing story…

While the media are running with a story over Royal Antwerp’s Daniel Opare as a potential half million replacement for the possibly outgoing James Tavernier, it seems to us at Ibrox Noise that someone in the squad has been staggeringly forgotten.

A right back who’s featured for his country, and who was signed with more than just squad in mind.

Matt Polster arrived in January amidst a lack of fanfare, it must be said, and the USA international did successfully impress on his trial at Auchenhowie, but the 25 year old’s best season in football, despite being regarded by many as a midfielder, was at RB for Chicago Fire, and his injury last season played a huge role in the team’s loss of fortune last campaign.

In short, do Rangers not already have a ready-made replacement for the captain should he leave?

From what we know, Polster is no slouch, and while he remains an unknown quantity around these parts, he clearly has enough around him to have had an excellent impact in the MLS while featuring for his country.

For Polster’s part, he signed on ‘out of sync’ with the Scottish game, given the differing schedules of cross-Atlantic seasons, and Steven Gerrard confirmed he could take up to a month to get up to speed with our climate.

Unfortunately, just as he hit readiness against Dundee in February, an injury in the warmup curtailed him and he’s been out of the picture since.

We’d imagine if Tavernier did move on Polster’s impressive RB performances for Fire would be at the uppermost of Gerrard’s thinking.

It just seems a bit odd for Rangers to seek Opare, decent player though he may be, when we already have a replacement RB on standby.

Strange.

  1. Particularly as, if we settle the LB slit, Flanagan can return to his natural side. We Should also surely have one or more youth getting ready to step up. So hard to see the need for another RB.

  2. Or it might just be another media story with no substance. I know, hard to believe that media stories aren't always true!

  3. We don`t know if Polsters good enough as we have never seen him play ,Flanagan is not good enough going forward and we don`t know if young Jordan Houston is ready yet so if Tav goes we will need a QUALITY replacement .We will find it impossible to find someone who creates as much but we at least need someone who is a threat going forward.

  4. Sorry but Polster is untested I know we have flannigan but people on here saying Candias is not good enough 2 be a Champ, I no idea how Polster going to work out but I bet with the Young African fighting 4 his place he will do alot better

  5. I'd Send Polster out on Loan to see how he does and to get him match fit and get some game time

If we do Sell Tav, we will need a New No.1 RB with Flanagan as the No.2 RB

We also have to get LB sorted and stop playing Flanagan there.
