Surprise twist in Rangers summer transfer ‘saga’….

If one thing stood out over the past 18 months or circa three or four transfer windows, it’s been the circus of speculation over Alfredo Morelos.

Every new window another 500 clubs were linked with the Colombian striker, with speculated fees varying from £5M to £20M.

Either way, as the latest window approached, the ‘certainty’ was that Morelos would leave for big bucks.

Since he’s arrived, Morelos has been linked with big money moves to Renhe, Newcastle, Borussia, Eintracht, Leipzig, Marseille, Nice, Fenerbahce and about a dozen other clubs. Pedro Caixinha’s Azul Cruz are the latest.

But the fact that a nothing outfit in the Americas managed by a Rangers failure is the only name now being linked does point at a big gravity shift over the former Helsinki man.

The stories around Morelos have dried up dramatically the past month – for better or worse, the news has been on Kamara, Arfield, Tavernier, McCrorie and a host of others – but conspicuous by its absence has been the regular and latest links over Alf.

It boils, for us, down to two things – that absolutely horrific disciplinary record which broke all sorts of unwanted records for the 22-year old, and his axing from Carlos Queiroz’ Colombia squad for the Copa America.

Is it a good thing? Well it’s a question of whether Rangers fans still want the player in their team. The Morelos-less split Rangers was by a distance the best the team delivered the whole season – in terms of consistency and results, those five matches, Killie aside with weaker XI, were truly excellent and a good sign of things to come.

But the Morelos question is a big one – he could fetch us a few quid, but the quiet surrounding him these days is noticeable and there is just a slight nagging feeling his stock has gone down and other clubs have lost interest.

We couldn’t tell you if that’s a good thing, or if it’s a good thing that Azul Cruz are now being mentioned.

It’s really down to you, the reader.

  1. Keep him. Fingers crossed he has learned red cards = no caps and no England. Next season 30+ goals and no red cards = £20 million plus

  2. Its not looking like anyone will pay 10mil let alone 20 fans are hoping for.
Problem is he clearly wants a move hes not quite ready for. If he's going to be at Ibrox next season he needs to put aside any dissapointment he has about not getting a move and get onboard. Dafoe deserves his chance as no9 and shouldnt be easily displaced

  3. Get rid. Morelos represents poor performances lost points and now much needed transfer income.
    Simple.

  4. Still banding about the 20 million figure for El Buffalo. Not a chance. He and Tav are going no where. No club will pay that kind of money for them!!

    • Don't see Morelos going for that kind of money this summer. Needs a season with goals and without cards. Ryan Jack cleaned up, so can El Buffalo.
But Tav? What is the going rate for an attacking fullback in the premiership? It is a lot higher than £10 million, even without assists.
Someone will want to take a chance on that. I think we will get an offer we can't refuse, £10 million plus

  5. We now have to rebuild his value and that will take him sorting out his disciplinary problems and banging in another 30 goals next season. Neither can be guaranteed.
The wider issue is that while he is a fine player he does cause us problems because we have difficulty replacing him when he isn't available or just having a bad day without completely changing our system. It seems we can only play one way with him in the team.

  6. I can't understand the venom that some fans have for Morelos. No question he is a frustrating character, and I was as pissed off with him as anyone after the Celtic game but people seem to forget just how good the kid is. He scored 17 goals and had 8 assists in 27 starts in the Premiership. That's more than double the stats for Ryan Kent and no one doubted him being valued at 10 million.
Unfortunately I don't think that the apparent lack of interest in Alfie means he will remain at Ibrox. I still think he will move south for 10-15 million and we will struggle to find another striker to replace him. I agree that the team played some of it's best football after the split but having the option of 2 tactically very different striking approaches would prevent the frustrating draws with Dundee, Motherwell and St Johnstone which hurt us so much.
Next season is one of the most important in our clubs history and I believe that we will have the best chance of making it to 55 if we keep Morelos. We have to accept the reality that we are a selling club but no matter what the cost, this season we have to keep our best players and Alfie is definitely one of them.
