Shock twist in signing saga – reports

In a heck of a shock twist, Rangers’ new signing Jake Hastie may be going the same path as potentially outgoing Glenn Middleton in being loaned out before he even sets foot in Ibrox.

The 21-year old winger has been reported as being immediately loaned out despite signing a four-year deal to switch to Rangers from Motherwell, and we do wonder what the motivation behind both the signing and this loan out are.

It’s an odd one – Hastie’s stats since arriving in Motherwell in January are good, no denying it. In 13 pre-split appearances he managed 7 goals and one assist – already matching or exceeding Ryan Kent on the goals tally, depending on your view.

But when we watched him against Rangers, he appeared awkward – not a smooth pacy gliding winger but a bambi on ice. It wasn’t impressive and Motherwell’s David Turnbull (himself subject to hot transfer speculation right now) stood out far more.

But Hastie still joined, and at 21 it looked like a safe bet given it was a free.

But now that he’s just going to be loaned back out, we do rather wonder why we brought him in at all?

Sure, we have a tonne of wingers, and a lot of uncertainty over a number of them, but bringing in another and loaning him out while loaning out another who is regarded as green is a strategy we less criticise more don’t understand.

We’re not Steven Gerrard and we don’t make the decisions, but we do find it an odd one – but then Celtic did similar with St Mirren’s Lewis Morgan. Loaned him straight back out to Paisley then put him in Sunderland for six months.

But then, we’re not Celtic nor do we wish to be. And while we do have an eye on the future, and we now know Hastie is ours for good, we’re less sure if this is a good or bad thing overall.

Maybe you guys and gals can tell us better?

  1. When you look how many wide players we have & how the team is set up there is realy only one place availible for a wide player when you have a MF set up of Davis, Jack, Kamara & Arfield supporting the one loan striker! There's a lot to choose from as it stands with Murphy, Grezda, Candieas, Jones, Hastie, Middleton, Mbade, aswel as Ojo on loan from Liverpool & possibly Kent also coming back…..putting guys like Middleton & Hastie out on loan makes sense as they are at a crucial time in there development where they need to be playing at a competitive level weekly rather than bouncing about in the reserves…..a similar situ will arise for the MF, Davis, Jack, Kamara, Arfield seems to be the favoured starters, but you have McCrorie (who I personally feel should be staying put rather than going on loan), Dorrans, Stewart, Docherty, Rossiter & Halliday! A lot of depth, but how do you keep them all happy??

  2. The kids had half of one good season playing for Motherwell. He's unlikely to be able to keep Jones, Murphy, Ojo, Middleton (although apparently he's on his way out on loan too) and potentially Kent and even Grezda out of the starting 11.
He can't develop by sitting on the Rangers bench. If he can succeed at a another Premiership club consistently over the next season then he might be ready to challenge for a place.

  3. They sent Ryan Christie out for a while and it has worked for them. Young players need to play. Hastie will learn more in a season where he plays 35 games than 4 starts and 6 sub appearances for us.
Any young player we can't or won't give 20 games to, not including 85th minute subs, should be off on loan learning. Ideally in the SPL where they can damage other teams.
As Glyndo notes, we have a lot of players. Some will leave, some will stay and play. He hasn't included Atakayi and Mebude. These guys all need game time – get them out on loan!

    • Good point SWH. Sending Middleton to Doncaster might get him game time but does nothing for us. Much better if he went to someone like Hearts where he might do damage to Ceptic and also gain valuable SPL experience. Likewise send Hastie back to Motherwell.

  4. I thought he would at least have gotten a chance to show what he could do in pre-season.

But we're looking a bit bloated winger wise. Especially if we get kent back on loan

  5. a think it makes sense, he's only 21 so 1 year out on loan will do him no harm, better than sitting on bench, look what it's done to Docherty , hopefully he plays a part in first team for new season.

  6. Just a wee note if you want to be 100% accurate then you should realise Hastie will not be signed on a free as the two clubs are still trying to agree a fee or it will go to a tribunal as the player is under 22

    • He's our player, free or not. We ommitted the word 'effective' because he won't cost much. But pedantically speaking you're correct.
