Rangers’ massive £10M risk…

As Rangers fans are only too well aware, a number of Rangers’ key assets are vulnerable to sale.

Manager Steven Gerrard has already admitted every player has a price, and is for sale at the right one, and the player most key in our thinking here at the site with regards this is Scott Arfield.

We know this lad’s stock has skyrocketed since the season he’s had, and as a Canada international not to mention captain, Arfield is in the form of his life having regained his career after a bitty spell with Burnley.

In short, despite his age, Rangers could still easily command £10M for him, because he is just that important to us.

But is that worth the risk? Arfield has become an absolute fulcrum to Rangers – when he’s in the side, Rangers play. When he isn’t, the team is lost.

The difference the ex-Falkirk man makes is almost incalculable, and frankly he’s the real captain out there.

But could Rangers make better use of the £10M he’d potentially rake in?

There is talk that Greg Docherty could take that mantle, as he is now a goalscoring workhorse and a playmaker, having had a wonderful time at Shrewsbury, but he lacks the experience of Arfield and the leadership.

We know we sound like we’re ludicrously fawning over the 30-year old, but weren’t we all after he destroyed Scott Brown not once but twice?

This guy is such a colossal component to how Steven Gerrard’s Rangers want to play, that even £10M doesn’t seem adequate compensation to losing that influence.

But it is a real conundrum. Premier League sides in England are monitoring, this we know – Southampton are the most notable of course, and it is very realistic that a big big bid will come in for him.

But is it worth accepting and selling to rebuild the team? Or is Arfield that good and that important that he’s priceless to Rangers?

You tell us.

  1. Arfield doesn't want go back to EPL pressures and clearly more physical demands of that level let's not kid ourselves. He seems happy at Ibrox clearly enjoying his stature and love of the crowd . We have 2 or three more assets that could be sold before him Morelos Tav and perhaps even Docherty whom I like but don't see he would get the same time playing he had become used too.

  2. Got to keep him gets in behind a defence and makes good runs as we saw with Defoes dummy against the soap dodgers.

  3. I'm actually not convinced that any EPL team see someone the wrong side of 30 playing in the SPL as a solution to their problems. These clubs have mega bucks and can fish the biggest ponds in world football.
A wider question could be what if we were to sell Arfield, Morelos, Tavernier, Barasic and Grezda for very big money? It would put us on a very sound financial footing but could set us back 2 or 3 years in a playing sense.

  4. I think hes too slow and over rated. Weve been struggling all season with finding a creative spark from midfield. We brought Davis in and everyone seems to ne playing better. Its not Arfield thats making the difference. Davis is a leader and is better at reading the game than Jack et al. Davis will be our most important player this season regardless of who we sign imo. Sell arfield and get a younger quicker model. Hopefully Kamara etc all learn as much as possible playing with Davis.

  5. There's a big difference between the gentile football that's played in Shrewsbury, to Ibrox. The pressure-tap is full on, up here. So I don't get too carried away over reports of a good season, down there for Dochs. Also, as I see it, Mark Allen is a 'weak link' in our struggle to the top. Signings that he's had a hand in, have too many times, turned out to be dross. This needs addressed. Arfield must stay. Simple as that. Agree with Sam The Skull, this is no time to be messing about with dross or getting signings, well wrong. Get rid of Dorrans & Rossiter, to boot. Allen should go, Arfield must stay.
