Does returning face at Auchenhowie give Stevie G a problem?

Rangers return to pre-season began today as a number of squad members showed up for Monday’s session, and while there’s a few bits and pieces to chew through, we are strangely curious about possibly the least important nugget – the return of Jak Alnwick.

Harshly treated, Alnwick proved himself a more adept keeper than the current number two, but found himself in Scunthorpe seeking first-team football.

And he did well down south – for a dreadfully mediocre side who suffered relegation, Alnwick still managed a staggering 7 clean sheets in 41 appearances – indeed, he was one of the few performers in that side which is now League Two.

And we know from his cameos at Ibrox that he’s a keeper alright – no Allan McGregor, but a class above Foderingham.

He was back at Auchenhowie today, his loan Glanford Park now over, and we do wonder what happens next. He isn’t good enough to be our number one, but he’s probably too good to be a number two, even if that’s what we’d like to have him as.

His displays in the split of 2018 were what stopped some bad results being even worse, and he certainly stood out in Foderingham’s place. That said, the goals conceded weren’t exactly impressive – 10 goals in two crazy games at Parkhead and Hibs is damning.

That said, Alnwick, overall, has done a turn – whether Gerrard would rate him as good enough for McGregor’s deputy or whether he himself isn’t interested in that anyway remains to be seen.
