What’s happened with Alfredo Morelos?

With the big summer window upon us, Rangers and Steven Gerrard have been underway in earnest with securing new players, scouting targets and offloading a few of the unneeded and unwanted.

However, one player, significantly hyped over the past season due to his stats (and behaviour) whose global stock has gone notably quiet in recent weeks is Alfredo Morelos.

A ‘sure sale’ only a month ago, Morelos’ desirability appears to have somewhat plummeted, and despite murmurs to the contrary in the media, not a single bid for his services appears to have been planned, far less arrived.

Indeed, Gerrard confirmed just one bid has been submitted in his time as manager, and that was a £2.5M offer from either Marseille or Nice. It was of course rejected out of hand, but since then, despite claims of big money moves for his signature, it’s all gone really very quiet.

And there are evidently three reasons for this.

Morelos’ disciplinary record this season is officially the worst in Europe. Five red cards is some kind of record, albeit we cannot recall if it’s just the worst in Europe or the worst European sending off haul in history. Teams are less keen on a player who can’t stay on the pitch.

Secondly the worst red card of the lot was the Celtic incident, and once he found himself suspended for four matches (and this time no one had an iota of defence for him including his manager) the game was up – who would want a player who lets his team mates down like this on the huge occasions?

And thirdly his omission from the Colombian CONCACAF squad for this summer was probably the worst. From a rising star of Colombian football to completely whitewashed for a huge South American tournament for Carlos Queiroz’ first serious first of the Coffee Men gig.

But you know what? For all his faults, and Morelos has many, there has been a bit of groundswell to see him stay – if we’re only going to get modest million, what’s the point in selling Scotland’s top scorer?

Morelos certainly has issues, no denying that, but pound for pound he’s the best striker in the SPL, and if he can get some help, if Steven Gerrard and Rangers can coax some discipline and a better attitude from him, maybe he’s an asset worth keeping.

Rangers with an on-form Alfredo Morelos who actually wants to be here is a better prospect than without, arguably, despite the stellar form over the split without him.

It’s a tricky one for sure, but either way, the hubbub around him certainly died down recently.

  1. Agreed. If he wants a big move, and he does, then he is going to have to earn it. A season with fewer yellows, no reds and more goals and he will be off with our best wishes and a couple of caps. To be replaced with an awful lot of dosh.
OR, he can stay petulant and stay in Scotland. It's his choice.

  2. They're holding off, thinking because he had a quiet end to the season, his worth has plummeted many millions. Only a MUG would fall for that one but I would set Marseille and Nice straight, for their cheek and NEVER sell to them. Fenerbache were sniffing about. Don't fall for lowballers, Rangers.

  3. I am one for him Remaining(sorry!). On paper his 5 red cards seem dreadful. But you know as well as I do some were unwarranted. And I am afraid the refs can be a little mafia and SG complaining about the refs at start of season , whilst correct, was naive. And Morelos ( and Rangers) suffered. But SG seems to have moderated his statements of late so next season may see a different attitude. Sure every opponent will goad Alfredo but perhaps he will have learned and that will be a great benefit. Defoe is too old to play every game all season and by managing both well we could have a great season. So a brilliant season will see his value rocket again. So it’s win win if he can get it right.
The red card against Celtic was stupid but we did outplay them on 3 out of 4 games. What we need is a little bit more muscle in midfield to handle the cloggers in the SPLF. Hopefully we can have all our deals done before Euro games begin and not be scrambling at close of window( window should close before season begins, another stupidity from authorities). So keep him.

  4. If we are to stop 9 in a row we need Defoe AND Morelos and a third. Unless it's for 12 mill + keep him for another season and get him professional help which Alex Rae said did wonders for his behavioural issues.

  5. He scores goals for sure but he has cost us a lot of points. He has shown no sign of improvement with his attitude and as the season went on he seemed to get worse. I for one do not want to put up with his shite another season. If its not possible to get big money for just yet keep him as a sub and let him know he's not that important.

  6. "Keep him as a sub and let him know he's not that important", he was the top scorer in the Premiership despite missing out in half the games because of his petulance. When on the park he was our best player by a mile. He's the most talented and exciting player we've had for a decade, on what planet should we keep him as a sub.
The reality is he is that important to Rangers. If he stays he will be instrumental in us making it to 55. If he leaves, and I would love to see him stay, he will bring in upwards of 10 million which will be reinvested in the team. Either way Morelos is the most important player at the club.
I can understand peoples anger at his childish behaviour but some of the anger and almost hatred for him is way over the top. In his previous 2 seasons he didn't get 1 red card. Last seasons lack of discipline is unacceptable but something new for Alfie and can be controlled. Hopefully losing his guaranteed starting spot and being dropped from Columbia's squad will have taught him a major lesson. If it does and he stays he'll win us the league then leave for upwards of 20 million.

  7. Morelos is a potentially a much better player than he gives at the moment. The paradox is however he is with Rangers and he wants to play at another level ?? I'm a little bemused by that in that Rangers are in Europe competing for Trophy's and hopefully going to win the league . I don't know what people may be telling young Alfredo but that's a very good level considering where he came from and that he has not done much else !! I would like to see him move on but only if we get good money for him…Again though if Ryan Kent who is good is worth 10 Million Alfredo is too possibly more… then we have to get a replacement Another gem like him would be good and is possible with good scouting and patience….Lets hope Mr Allen and SG and co are doing their homework

  8. Let's be honest, when a player says he wants to play at a higher level, he often means a league totals Morelos 20 goals and 4 assists in 2649 minutes to Kent 6 goals and 4 assists in 2082 minutes.
Now remember that Kent is being quoted at £10 million. They are 5 months apart in age and Kent has only had one good season. Morelos has had at least 3, 1 in Finland and 2 at Rangers. That reckoning has to put Morelos at £20 million plus minimum or there is no point in selling him.

  9. I said when he got sent off against Ceptic that his value would plummet. Who wants a player that continually lets you down in the big games? I think he will stay and we will need to rebuild his value. That requires him to score another 30 goals next season and to control his discipline. Neither of which can be guaranteed.

  10. Seems everyone is missing the point with the lad. He maybe thinks he is a superstar but I'm yet to see him turn it on against Celtic.
He is a young lad learning his game, why are we so critical to arguably the best striker we have had in a decade.
Keep the lad and let Rangers develop him all this nonsense has to stop around his discipline he has been made the panto villain.
Few players done wise and seen no action taken…

  11. Remember, Ryan Jack had 4 red cards the previous season. Last season? None. If Morelos can screw the nut and not rise to the fouling and niggling of other teams like Celtic and Aberdeen, he can do a job and get a move at the right price

    • He didnt look like a man who has learned his lesson in the Killie game, applauding the ref post yellow card!
