Rival’s attack at Rangers blows up in their face

After all the hype about Kilmarnock cutting Rangers’ ticket allocation for yesterday’s curtain-drawing season finale at Rugby Park, giving away fans just the one stand to accommodate home supporters for the club’s anniversary, the embarrassment as the three home stands appeared significantly empty while Rangers’ stand was completely packed was as predictable as it was ridiculous.

Killie’s decision was based on little more than spite, and as their fans struggled to even fill out two thirds of the home ground on the day they were playing for a European place was the usual kind of backwards pettiness we’ve come to expect from the wee clubs in the SPL.

That these clubs will do everything in their power to ‘get one over’ on Rangers, even, in this case, where it meant possibly losing out on revenue.

It was justified by some beforehand, that it was their anniversary and they had every right to celebrate it, but equally we can’t ever recall that being used as a reason before by any other club in Scotland to reduce a final day allocation for any visiting side for any kind of anniversary.

This just struck us as a piece of petty spite at Rangers, after the vitriol between the clubs this season.

And perhaps that’s fair enough – eye for an eye and all that?

But end of the day we’re not sure it’s a gesture they could afford to symbolise in the first place.

The Blue Pound is worth a lot to clubs like Kilmarnock. Who appeared to cut their nose off to spite their face.

  1. I wasn't confident at all when I first saw the line up, I also want Morelos gone as quickly as possible and that money spent on 1/2 decent signings. His selfishness has cost us a lot of goals this season. It is a team sport and I think we perform much better without him.

    • Trouble is Craig, there us no guarantee that our next striker would be Morelos plus, rather than a Lafferty. Then we would lose the goals he scored.
I agree we have been good without him, but that is a training matter, to improve him. Then we can sell him for more money and hopefully find a replacement.

  2. The problem with us is we think we're entitled to these stands as it's happened before, if Kilmarnock decide they would rather the possibility of filling the stadium with their own fans on the last game of the season then so be it, it's their business not ours. Also, the phrase "cut their nose off to spite their face" only applies if we decide not to take them up next season on a second stand should they offer it, if they offer it we will fill it no matter how many objections there are to it.

  3. Yes it was nonsense but ….

Tbf – Kilmarnock only club not to kick us in teeth when we were down in 2012?

  4. David Edgar is right about them. Overly physical, but at the slightest opportunity, they'll flop to the ground and milk sympathy from the ref. Not hard, when Collum or Clancy, are refereeing. They are a team I love it when we thrash. They're underhand behaviour is not to be underestimated but if that's how they want to play it…

  5. Kilmarnock embarrassed themselves by taking away the stand. They made a big deal of it, only to be shown to the world with empty stands on BT Sports. They will allocate both stands again next season, however, I would forgive our club if they just insisted to continue with the one stand!!

  6. The same has happened at other grounds notably Pittodrie and Easter Road. The SPL must be the only business to drive customers AWAY from their product. However, if these clubs want to turn down around £75,000 twice a season (4 if you include Ceptic) then so be it. Maybe Kilmarnock could've put the money towards a grass pitch.
