Rangers or Liverpool? Stevie’s dilemma

Steven Gerrard leads his side out tomorrow for the final Old Firm match of the season, but this is one of the first times we can remember that the boss’s focus may not entirely be on us.

We know Stevie is a Liverpool boy through and through, and with the Premier League title decider taking place two hours later in England, right as the Old Firm ends, we can forgive him a little for having more than one eye on events down south as the race to the championship reaches boiling point.

Supporting two teams is very common these days, indeed one bookmaker has made a rather amusing ad about the idea, taking it a tad extreme, but the point is clear, and Gerrard’s heart will always be in Anfield, even if he’s at Ibrox.

In truth, it’s a bit of a tough one – Stevie has said on record that he’s got two teams now, Liverpool and Rangers. And while ideally we’d expect our manager 100% focused on us every match, we can certainly understand, on this occasion, especially given the gravity of the title decider, his attention being significantly swayed.

Of course, this is probably the least relevant Old Firm match since Kris Boyd finally scored v Celtic in 2007 and so we can allow the most important final day in the EPL since Aguerooooooo to grab most of Gerrard’s attention.

This is not to say we’ll slack – hopefully Rangers sign off their home season with a win. But there’s little doubt SG will be conflicted.

He wants to win against Celtic, he’s very much one of us now. We always want to beat Celtic, as such occasions are very rare these days.

But who can blame him for praying he sees the first Liverpool title of his relevant lifetime, and running off at full time to watch it?

We don’t hold this one against him. We know Liverpool are his team. And he’s embraced everything Rangers probably above and beyond what just being paid to be our manager could have expected.

So given what rides on this one (nothing, frankly), and what rides on Liverpool – he gets this one.

  1. Firstly, good article ibrox noise.
Steven Gerrard is too professional and too much of a winner to not be fully focused as our manager,on beating them tomorrow,i've got no doubt about his commitment to us whatsoever.Of course as he's a big liverpool boy, that he'll be very interested in how liverpool get on tomorrow and if they can hopefully win the league title.I honestly hope they do it.Gerrard has said many times now that his kids and him are now woven into the rangers fabric and always will be supporters of glasgow rangers. He said his kids are rangers nuts who wear the rangers gear.He knows if he does a very good job as our manager, then he has more than a fighting chance of becoming the manager of his beloved liverpool,a good 4 or 5 years down the line.If he wins the league title for us and trophies in general then i certainly won't begrudge him eventually leaving as our manager,to become the liverpool manager in a few years time.Steven gerrard our rangers manager is pure class. He's loved by us rangers supporters, just the same way the liverpool fans love him. He'll go on to become a terrific manager and as well as managing liverpool,i also think he'll manage england, further on down the line.I'll certainly hold close to my heart, that his first manager's job was managing us and i'm very proud of that.

  2. Are you mad there is no pointless old firm 100% commitment then he can focus on Liverpool the match will be over 2hrs before there kick off

  3. Gerrard can't influence what happens in the race for the EPL, indeed in a way maybe even Liverpool can't. He is and always has been a top class professional and will be fully focused tomorrow.

  4. I don't have any doubt whatsoever, that Stevie will be 100% fully focused on Rangers game against Celtic tomorrow, he is far too professional to be affected by the build up to Liverpool's game tomorrow. After the final whistle at Ibrox he might well rush off to watch the Liverpool game, in fact I am sure he will. But only after the game at Ibrox is finished will he switch his attention to Liverpool.

  5. It's very obvious to me that Gerrard shows far more passion for Liverpool at interviews than Rangers. He talks with the utmost enthusiasm and positivity about Liverpool, but is very laid back and non committal when it comes to questions about us. Just an observation.
That said, I don't believe he will be thinking about Liverpool when he has to think about the biggest game of the day for us, Rangers v Celtic, or at least I hope not!!

    • Jimbo of course he wants liverpool to win. We would expect nothing less but Steven will give everything for an old firm victory, dont u worry about that
