Ross McCrorie made all the headlines last weekend for his ‘curious’ cameo in goal. He didn’t have to do too much, mercifully, but sadly Allan McGregor’s inexplicable moment of madness meant Rangers were down a keeper having used all three substitutes.
But for us, this was not the biggest crime of the day. It was the fact McCrorie’s appearance between the sticks overshadowed what had been an impeccable performance as DM from 80 minutes until the 90th when McGregor’s lunacy kicked in, pun firmly intended.
The Academy graduate, for the 10 minutes he got, did everything in his power to give Steven Gerrard a real problem – not a ball wasted, barely a tackle missed (one dubious foul on 86 minutes) and plenty of harrying, hussling, and good pressing especially on Omeonga.
He looked very, very good, a young player eager to take the opportunity to stake a claim as to why he should play more.
It is true that he isn’t as comfortable in possession as Glen Kamara is, and he isn’t exactly creative, but for the pure dirty work in deep midfield of ensuring opponents are never given time and are never comfortable, Ross McCrorie is as good as anyone in the SPL.
It is just such a shame a near-impeccable performance as a sub got completely overlooked because he had to deputise in goal.
We are very lucky to have a player of his quality as squad depth – he really is knocking on the first team door.
We will suggest a warning though. The less game time he gets next season, the more likely it may become that he may seek a move out. Gerrard has managed McCrorie fairly well this season, but those knocks on the door will get louder.
It’s a decent problem to have though.
I'm a big fan of both Kamara and MC Crorie . I think he can be a better player technically and hopefully more exposure to game time will improve that . Kamara on the other hand doesn't have MC Grorie,s aggression or dig, He does have technical ability but can be lackadaisical at times and slow in decision making . I would like to see Docherty back at Ibrox as he could also be another superb young Scottish Rangers player.
I think docherty is the better around midfield the McCrorie.
Still not convinced that mccrorie is a midfield. Look at Ayer at the manky mob. With the right coaching I think mccrorie could be at the heart of defence. The fan would have to be patient as he will make mistakes and with Celtic going for 9 he won't get the chance.
Loan him out to a Ross County or st.mirren get him experience

It's hard to see how he will get a regular game especially if we bring in the better quality midfield players that we need.
Good article IN. I have loved seeing this lad grow and knew since he was a kid that he could make it. He's had his learning curves in big games, but has taken heed and making less mistakes. It's up to him to continue working hard and seize his chances, but I have no doubt he knows how to carry the weight of the jersey and there is more to come from the lad,, a gem who could be Rangers captain one day.
I know he's had problems there in the past but Ross McCrorie has all the physical attributes to be a top centre half and captain. I think he is slightly limited to play in midfield and there will always be better players around the club.
