Stevie lines up four-man swoop as summer window looms fast

Rangers were last night linked with a summer raft of signings, with a sudden clutch of players said to be on the radar for a move to Govan the upcoming window.

On-loan Birmingham striker and long-time Rangers target Greg Stewart has suddenly resurfaced as Steven Gerrard looks to next campaign for a more serious assault at the title. The 29-year old forward, on loan at Aberdeen at present, has had a solid season at Pittodrie, with 19 goals/assists this term. He fared less well at his parent club in 16/17 with zero goals or assists in the league for Birmingham in England’s second top tier, but his ability to do it in the SPL will be of most interest to Gerrard.

Meanwhile, Wigan’s Nick Powell is also still on the radar. The 25-year old forward is a free agent this summer, with a stunning market value of £3.5M and with 7 goals and 7 assists in 27 appearances for Wigan, we can see why Gerrard, and a host of other clubs, are interested in the English attacker’s services.

Furthermore, the Jake Hastie story, as we mentioned yesterday, has been resurrected from the dead, and claims are that wherever the Fir Park winger moves will cost his new club a modest six-figure sum. He seems a dead cert to move on from Steve Robinson’s men.

And then there’s still rumours about Graeme Shinnie – word has it Derby have ‘beaten’ Rangers to his signature and he’ll move south, but nothing concrete has materialised on that one and he may still be one that Stevie is looking at.

And last but not least John Souttar – the Hearts stopper is curiously interesting Gerrard going by the buzz at present – he would set Rangers back an alleged £1M if the allegations are true, but the reality is much more likely to be closer to half that.

As we near the window, the names will come thick and fast.

But we must admit, there’s a lack of really convincing names overall being connected with a switch to Ibrox.

We can’t really see the above, even with Jordan Jones, should we hold onto Ryan Kent and by a miracle retain Alfredo Morelos, being much of a threat to Celtic.

Not great, to be honest.

  1. Not a fan of Stewart but highly rate the other three. Hastie looks a star of the future and to pick him up for coppers would be a steal. Souttar would be a great signing as he is already playing in our league and has lots of room for improvement. Nick powell looks a star in a poor wigan side and would be the number 10 type we lack at present.

  2. None of these guys are an improvement on any of the players that we have now, the quality has to improve if we are to improve / progress further. The squad needs to be thinned out and quality players brought in.

  3. None of these excite me to be honest. Shopping in most expensive shop in the World with pocket money to spend if we keep looking at England. Powell might be quality but never been someone I've noticed before and I watch a lot of Championship games on Sky.

Hastie – one for future but we need to consider Middleton and Atakyai as well so pretty well off for wingers.

Souttar – still has so much to learn and can't believe he's only 22. Could be decent squad player.

As for Shinnie, he's found his level at Aberdeen (as did Niall McGinn) and he can't go higher so no good for us

Ideally, I would raise 20m selling Morelos and Tav then add 10m "usual summer kitty" and go get 5 "high quality" players, probably from foreign leagues assuming we've been scouting well abraod now…

  4. Agreed, the above names certainly not setting the heather on fire, we need to aim higher than this to compete against those from across the river, sorry IMO not good enough !!

  5. The names dont excite me,sell Morelos and Tav(i would have got rid of him long ago),add a couple million more and buy 3 big names 😉😉😉

    • Problem with that strategy is we have only improved the number of good players by one. If all three work out. You may not rate Tav, but he has got a lot of goals and more assists than anyone else in the league

  6. Couldn't agree more with the comments from other fans. We Need Quality & none of the names touted don't fill myself with believing that these player's will take Rangers to the next level level,as in Winning 🏆 & 55 Imo.

  7. Its fine saying we need quality guys. Who would you sign as alternatives to the players mentioned. The £30 million you suggest spending sounds great but who do you suggest we bring in.

    • Thats a question I hope our scouting team can answer. Put another way, who had heard of Edouard or Rogic before Celtic signed them?? That has to be the type we need to be identifying and spending 5-10m on for the right player.

Ajax another example where they signed players at 8-10m but only a small handful, very few were household names.

    • If Edouard was signed four £9m then I guess a few teams might have heard of him. In any case players of £5m plus are probably still out of our reach.

  8. All of These are Pish!
    Plain and Simple 👊🏻

None are an improvement on what we have 👎🏻

    Stevie get your act together!

  9. Remember, "quality" players cost. Man Utd will struggle to bring in 4 quality players with only £250 million to spend. We operate in a different market, but if they are "quality" players, someone else with more money than us will have noticed them too.
We still have "pulling power" in Scotland, but little elsewhere. Which is why it is sensible to look at home for players we can develop.
Yes, let's look for a bargain abroad, but we need to be developing our own players. The Unders are full of good youth that need a chance. Which they won't get unless we take a risk and play them. there are Ajax players that we would not be trusting because they are too young.
IN, do you really think we can get Souttar for half a million? that would be very good business. Still annoyed we didn't get Halkett, but Souttar for anything under a million would make up for it.
What we need to challenge Celtic is a stronger defence and a more resolute midfield. We could do with more goals coming from midfield, so play Arfield further forward and get Middleton into the team again. But we have outscored them this season, so stop dropping soft points and we are closer than you might think.

  10. What makes you think that Hearts would sell a young Scotland international to us for £500k. There is no chance unless he is out of contract.
