Rangers fans come up with this superb idea to deal with Alfredo Morelos…

As the fallout (much of it deeply serious, and our thoughts with the 47-year old in critical condition) continues after Sunday’s dramatic Old Firm clash, one of the most common replies we’ve received on the site over events at Parkhead has been a suggestion for the way forward.

This suggestion, frequent and possibly less knee-jerk than it normally would be after a big result like that, is based on what would ultimately profit Rangers the most:

Sell Alfredo Morelos and use the proceeds to buy Ryan Kent.

Whatever Morelos has done on the pitch, good or bad, the boy remains valuable – however much he is currently unpopular with supporters, a Colombian international with his stats both domestically and in Europe is a prized commodity. And big teams want to pay big to get him.

It is evident his Rangers story is coming to an end – in truth we were done with him on the site a long time ago, as regular readers will be well aware, but the fanbase as a whole has joined us now after his indiscretions at Parkhead.

And if Ryan Kent really does have a £7-12M pricetag on his head, and can get his form more consistent (5 or 6 great displays a season isn’t value for money) then he’s one we can justify paying that kind of cash for.

When he’s been in the zone (not often enough for our liking) he’s been unstoppable – we have been (more than he has) consistent in asserting this. And that is an asset. He was our best player yesterday by some distance, and was truly up for the fight, causing all sorts of problems. Maybe not quite as exceptional as the December fixture, but it certainly joins his best displays of the season.

And that kind of tool in our armoury is worth retaining, even at high cost. Yes, our recent articles on the topic were negative, and unhappy with the price – and we still are, and with Liverpool’s lack of wanting to help us, but Kent himself is on record as confirming he wants to stay at Ibrox. Even if his manager didn’t take the opportunity to doubly state that when given the chance.

It’s two birds killed with one stone, and the majority of supporters, who came up with the idea, incidentally, not us, seem to advocate it.

We would too, frankly.

  1. Maybe I'm on the outside here IN but I think we have already signed two potential Kent replacements in Jones and Middleton they have all the attributes to be as good if not better so no to spending Morelos Money (If we can get any !!!) On Kent …let's go for a top midfield creative player and another striker

    • I agree. Kent is likely to be too expensive and is too inconsistent and that money could buy us 2 good players. Jones, Middleton and don't forget Murphy may not be as good as Kent on his best days but maybe can play better more consistently.

  2. I suggest we offer Liverpool £6m and a 20% sell on. If we gave to go a million over that, fair enough. But we have to be careful not to overpay for potential. What if he doesn't get better and/or more consistently good?

  3. There are far bigger issues across the team that signing Kent isn't going to solve, in my opinion. As far as I see it we're left with 2 central defenders after this season, Goldson and Katic. Hopefully Katic is in the managers plans but it still leaves us desperately short of cover at the back. At the other end of the pitch, we have Defoe and Lafferty. Neither seem to fit our current system particularly well, and in Defoe's case, I think he'd struggle starting every game assuming we managed a European/domestic cup run. As good as Kent has looked, I don't see the value in splashing £8m+ on one player when we're going to have gaping holes at either end of the pitch. We've plenty of options on the left wing already, and, whilst they most likely won't be half the player Kent is, I feel the Morelos money would be better spent on a replacement striker, with anything left over signing some cover at the back.

Realistically it's unlikely that whatever fee we get for Morelos will be used fully to bring in other players, I expect some of our loans to be paid off with the cash also. No matter which way you cut it I believe we're in for a massive clear-out of deadwood this summer with a few quality signings hopefully coming through the door.

    • At least he would solve Scott Brown. If he falls screaming when Morelos doesn't touch him, how would he deal with Jones? he'd faint at the thought

  4. Here we go again and at the risk of repeating myself JORDAN JONES IS A MILLION MILES AWAY from being a Rangers player and will have the fans wishing to have GREZDA back, please please please forget about Jordan Jones and think more about his agent,NOW THERE IS A GUY DOING A FIRST RATE JOB !!!!!!

  5. He hardly set the heather on fire in European games.
13 games, 4 goals, 4 yellows and 1 red card

    • If big clubs want to sign someone to sit in the stand for half the season then I'd like to put myself forward as a cheaper alternative.

  6. I’m not convinced Rangers will get more than £5M for Freddie. He will be measured by his temperament and the opposition he scored against. Finnish and Scottish leagues are not a proving ground. He would have to have been putting Celtic to the sword regularly and scoring against decent European opponents. Better to keep him and work on his attitude
