Multimillion dogfight for Rangers star emerges – not Morelos

After a number of outlets claimed the Scott Arfield story was fake, the Canadian international’s links to Southampton have grown significantly today after it emerged St Mary’s DoF Ross Wilson, who worked with Arfield at Falkirk, is not only interested in taking his old warhorse back again, but isn’t alone in courting him.

Arfield, whose omission from Rangers’ POTY award remains absolutely bewildering, has had a stellar first season at Ibrox and along with McGregor and possibly Ryan Kent remains the best signing of the Steven Gerrard era, and his extensive EPL experience coupled with international status has brought him to the attention of a glut of top-flight clubs who seek an experienced and in-form midfielder to add to their engine room.

Southampton, of course, are the main name being touted, but sources suggest they are by no means alone and while Soton are preparing a £3M bid, if there is to be competition from other EPL outfits, we would imagine the fee would go in excess of £4M or even beyond £5M.

The question, again, arises – do Rangers want to sell such a key man, such a vital proponent of Steven Gerrard’s system?

As we advocated before, we rate this player very highly indeed but it’s not often Rangers could be in line for multi-millions for a 30+ year old.

And that money could be wisely used on a couple (or even three) high quality players in positions which criticially need filled.

Equally though Arfield is the most important and most influential midfielder we have, and his loss would be significant, regardless of who came in.

It is Steven Gerrard and Arfield’s call should it all materialise.

  1. Firstly let me state EVERY player has their price and more so in the selling league,of scottish football.
Now moving on, there's no way i would want rangers to sell scotty arfield.Selling at any opportunity doesn't win league titles or any trophy in general. All this season has proven, that we're a far better team when scott arfield is playing.
This midfielder has played in one of the best standard leagues there is,
within world football. He obviously played there for burnley and in the english championship with huddersfield. We can all see that scott arfield has played at a much higher level, than he is currently playing in.Unless its really crazy money southampton,or any other club are offering us for arfield, then we must resist and gerrard should build his team around arfield. This guy scores goals from midfield and is by far the best we gave at rangers,in making superb runs, beyond our striker. He's undoubtedly, one of steven gerrard's best signings. He's a terrific attacking midfielder,in my eyes.We must keep him at all costs, imo anyway.Arfield has already hit double figures in goals for us and has between a 1 in 3 record in goals scored, which as anyone who knows anything about football will tell you,is a fantastic return.Lets resist and keep scotty arfield at ibrox.

  2. Of course if we are offered crazy money, then we will have to sell. Assuming of course that Arfield is willing to go elsewhere, and I am not absolutely sure that would be the case. He is a rangers supporters, and sounds as though this is where he wants to be. Let's hope he is still here next season!

  3. I wouldn't let Scotty go for any less than 8m, especially if English teams want him, that's sweetie money to them, I'd rather he stayed

  4. Don't sell. It would be madness for a lousy 3m and even 5m, would mean we'd struggle next season. Sell him at the end of NEXT season. If they must.

  5. I don't doubt Arfields ability but why would Southampton be looking at a £3m midfielder on the wrong side of 30. With the money at their disposal they must surely have loftier ambition.

  6. I wouldn't want to Sell Arfield but we have to be Realistic

£6.5m + and they can take him back to the Prem
