“Some haven’t” – who is Gerrard meaning?

Steven Gerrard’s concession that a number of his signings haven’t delivered begs the question;

Who?

Who is the manager referring to when he hints that despite the lion’s share, in his opinion, of his summer and winter signings delivering, there are a substantial number who didn’t.

Ibrox Noise takes you through the likely candidates:

Gareth McAuley:

This is an interesting one – we rate him highly on the site and his performances have been impressive, but frankly he’s hardly played for injury or favour and we suspect he might be one Gerrard, for some reason, isn’t happy with.

Nikola Katic:

Controversial inclusion but Gerrard’s dumping of him last November doesn’t bode well for his chances under the Anfield legend – he spent £2M on the Croat but lost faith in him and gave his shirt to Joe Worrall instead. While the fans and this site love the kid, we’re not sure if Stevie does?

Borna Barisic:

No one can say with a straight face this guy has delivered. No one.

Jon Flanagan:

Bright start but it dived from there and is not in Gerrard’s plans at all any more. Thankfully a free.

Lassana Coulibaly:

Promising for a while then deteriorated away into nothing, the Mali international will surely be gone this summer. A complete disappointment regardless of potential reasons why.

Steven Davis:

Just not done it since his return, Davis was expected to be a first-team fixture but can barely get on the bench. Just a bad signing even if Stevie gives encouragement to his chances of turning it around.

Eros Grezda:

Barely played, and really only put in about one decent 90 minutes when he’s been fit, Grezda has absolutely bombed to the tune of another £2M.

Kyle Lafferty:

What more do we need to add to this – £700K wasted. He just hasn’t stepped up.

Umar Sadiq:

We probably don’t need to say too much here either.

We suspect Gerrard is being generous saying the majority of his signings worked out. The definite successes in his mind, whether all fans agree or not, are McGregor, Arfield, Goldson, Worrall, Kent, and Kamara – all of whom are absolute first-team fixtures these days. Honourable mention to Defoe who does a bit of a job as a fringe squad member and a nod at Ejaria who Gerrard loved to select but who the fans never took to.

We’d probably word it more accurately as that the majority of his preferred first team-selections have retained their places.

  1. Kamara? Really. He's average at best, couldn't hold done a first team place at dundee. We haven't really seem much, had one good game but has also made one huge mistake. Time will tell with this one.
Worrell- IN you are forever slating the boy on the site. In my personal view katic, our own player, is a better centre half.

    • You may have missed our point BB. The article is basing itself on who SG’s favourites are. Who his successes are in his mind are based on who he selects.

  2. Look at the league table, we are only second, our ability to not deliver has been consistent all season, with the money provided, he has failed miserably. Forget Celtic for a minute, to be only 8 points ahead of Aberdeen is poor given the money we have splashed. Agree by and large with your article, but that is not really what counts, individually there are some good strenghs, but as a team mmmmmmJ

  3. SG says “I can’t fault the players’ application and them trying to create and make things happen. We have had all the ball, we have pushed and we have played football in the right way.”

Sorry we can’t afford to “play football in the right way” and not win! We have to win bottom line – it is that simple ….

  4. Macauley's performances have been inpressive, what performances? – He a dud and finished and shouldn't be at the club.

Lafferty is a striker and needs to start a run of games to be judged. Judging him off the bench getting 20 mins here or there isn't fair and doesn't give an accurate measure of what he could do(especially after an injury). If Gerrard had the minerals to play 2 up front especially at home he would probably have scored a few more. He was never prolific but he could get goals..Just not from the bench.

  5. "Barasic hasn't delivered" – Morelos will testify to that. He's still waiting for a delivery into the box from him this side of the year 🙂
