Loan Ranger and the MOTM – big call from Stevie…

Just like Greg Docherty before him, Jordan Rossiter’s revival at League Two, this time Bury, continues unabashed as the ex-Liverpool kid won MOTM for an absolutely brilliant display against Oldham.

The 21-year old holding midfielder has regained form away from the Development Squad at Auchenhowie and is showing just why Ibrox Noise and so many thousands of fans have always rated him so highly and willed him to succeed.

And if his post-match comments are anything to go by, Rossiter has already mentally departed Ibrox and considers himself a Bury player, given his reference to ‘we’ in terms of striving for promotion.

Like Docherty, it’s a big call from Gerrard – letting two outstanding young midfielders leave because he didn’t consider them good enough and both are arguably the best two players in League One and League Two, give or take – and we’d imagine one of them may well be in the Championship next season.

Of course, Rangers are now immensely stocked in defensive midfield – with Ross McCrorie, Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara seemingly now the established trio from which the choices are made. But Docherty has developed as a hell of an AM and that’s a slot Rangers are stricken for so we would really love to see him come back this summer and make that position at Ibrox his own.

As for Rossiter’s future? We’re just not sure Stevie rates him.

  1. SG has stated several times that he considers Jordan Rossiter is an outstanding talent.

It seems an extremely sensible course of action to send him out on loan and give Rossiter much needed playing time to get his sharpness back, and see if he is able to play football regularly without any recurring injury problems.

If his loan spell is a success, then Rangers (and the player) have to decide whether he is as good as or better than the other midfielders that Rangers have. It would be great if he proves his fitness as well as his ability at Bury, but for now it's early days.

  2. I do think that come the summer SG will have to decide on his top 7-8 midfielders, no more, and ship others out. Otherwise he will be blocking the path of the younger players.
Right now we have 10- Jack, McCrorie, Kamara, Rossiter, Docherty, Holt, Arfield, Murphy, Dorrans, Halliday. This assumes we keep neither Coulibaly or Davis. But even with Holt gone and Halliday reserve LB, that is 8. How do Barjonas, Burt, Kelly, Palmer and Thomson find a path to the bench with that many in front of them?

I suggest that we will have to look to offload a couple and while I would keep Docherty as an AM, Rossiter, Jack, McCrorie and Kamara is too many for one jersey. Unless Mccrorie goes back to CB I suspect Rossiter may be heading back down to England. A pity, I like him and hoped he would come good. But I don't see Jack, McCrorie or Kamara leaving.

  3. Let's not get carried away. Rossiter has won man of the match for yesterday. That doesn't make him one of the best players in that league. Hopefully he stays fit and flourishes and maybe we can recoup some money we've spent on him.

    • We didn’t say it did, Rob? But if you don’t think he is simply by going to a level way below his ability then we must agree to disagree.

  4. Sell him, before he gets crocked again. Sorry for being so harsh, but if we get offers in the summer, sell him. His next injury, could be his last and we'll be lefting with the burden. Sorry.
