Available for nothing this summer – should Rangers re-sign 24-year old?

There has been talk in the press over the past couple of months about a stunning return to Rangers for probably the biggest success and disappointing loss of the Journey that was Lewis Macleod.

The immensely talented midfielder left for around a million all those years ago, but his career at Brentford has been a diabolical litany of injury and absence.

Out of contract this summer, and he’s appeared on Rangers’ radar – we know, we know, another midfielder, right? And it’s also said Elland Road club Leeds are monitoring him too, so it’s a free transfer of a player who’s, theoretically, worth quite a few million and only aged 24.

Whether Rangers would need a dynamic central midfielder with a flair for attacking when we have Scott Arfield and Steven Davis to name just two is not entirely clear, but the Jordan Rossiter saga is always going to be where we point to when it comes to young midfielders with a horrific injury past.

Rossiter has now secured fitness and is doing the business at Bury, which shows that even a 24-month injury hell can have the end in sight – but in four and a half seasons at Griffin Park Macleod only has 40 appearances in total of a possible near 180.

And of course he’s out injured again it seems, a hamstring issue the latest in a long line of problems.

Should Gerrard take a summer punt on a free transfer over a player who has potentially the world at his feet? It’s a big risk, but if the wages are right then he’s a top class player who never wanted to leave in the first place, and it fits Gerrard’s propensity for bringing Rangers-supporting players to Ibrox.

Maybe being back home would get the best back out of him.

But that’s a huge maybe.

  1. Is there something in the water at Bury that keeps players fit? Could work, he may even have a good understanding with Rossiter in midfield.

However, injuries are a concern and I'd say not worth the risk. In recent years we have signed Rossiter, Dorans & Grezda who all had issues which we gambled on and haven't paid off. Even Barisic looked to be going the same way. I'm not sure we can afford to have another player made of glass on the books. We need to keep the wage budget sensible and the squad trim.

If it wasn't for the injuries I'd have him in a heartbeat

  2. Rossiter doing business at Bury? He has only been there a few weeks. Tell us at end of season. We have Dorransand Murphy long term injured. No need to take risks. We have had enough problems.

  3. We must get value for money and he is too much of a risk. It's silly to think that someone with 4 years of injury misery will suddenly get better once he arrives. Indeed the opposite is usually true.

  4. Definite no from me, we have enough injured on our ranks so please no more, would be another Barasic and Dorrans

  5. Talent wise it would be a definite yes but his injury record since he left us has been pretty bad .Over all I would say no for that reason .

  6. I would far rather have a 24 year old McLeod than a 34 year old Davis.
Both were good first time round, but only one has a future.
Take him on a prove yourself contract

  7. How much 'midfielders' do we need ffs?? SG is losing the plot with that midfield. NO, why should WE, get the scrapings?

  8. Not for Me, No
As much as I loved him as a well later for us before I would NOT take him back

    We have enough midfielders
And with his injury problems 🤔
