Dramatic transfer twist: Rangers close to two major new strikers

Rangers’ January business has taken a new twist after Liverpool’s Dominic Solanke’s proposed switch to Crystal Palace fell through following concerns by Palace boss Roy Hodgson over the striker’s fitness.

Steven Gerrard is said to be close to capturing Bournemouth’s Jermaine Defoe as well, but this new development involving the long-linked to Rangers youngster could suggest a slight development in Rangers’ January striker pursuits.

Gerrard is a well-known admirer of the Chelsea Academy graduate, and the forward looked close to a switch north when his former team mate took over at Ibrox, but it didn’t happen and he remained with the youths on Merseyside instead.

But after Palace withdrew last night from the deal to bring him to Selhurst Park, it could well be that Gerrard’s Rangers are now in a much stronger position to secure him north, and if the Defoe deal goes through too, the Ibrox side could manage to snatch two decent strikers in quick succession, along with Ryan Hardie should Rangers’ manager elect to bring the on-loan Livi man back.

Which would leave Rangers with a possible front line depth of Alfredo Morelos, Kyle Lafferty, Jermaine Defoe, Dominic Solanke and Ryan Hardie.

Quite an improvement, we’d have to say.

  1. I'd be happy to give defoe a chance. No spring chicken. But he's lethal in the box and we do create plenty of chances

  2. No way he'll bring in 2 high earning strikers, and recall hardie.
Gerrard has already stated, that he would only consider bringing hardie back, if he couldnt get one of his signing targets.
I expect hom to bring in one striker in january. For a team that mainly plays with one main striker, having 3 good options is enough.

  3. Solanke was a product of the Chelsea academy, there is also talk of him going to Schalke in Germany, regards Defoe,i don't think he wood come up here too much money down south and there's other teams in the epl looking for a top notch player like him, would also like to see young Hardie getting a chance to show his quality…No Surrender…

  4. Don't think it will happen re wages but I would love to see defoe up here, lethal in front of goal, age no problem for a player of that calibre.

  5. I think S.G may still have a tall, physical, 'battering-ram' type of No 9 in his thoughts. In games where teams sit in eg Killie at Ibrox, he bemoaned the fact we had over 20 corners and at least the same amount of crosses, into the box without creating a clear shot/header on goal. There's been many similar games throughout the 1st half of the season. Signing a quality midfielder like Davis would undeniably help our cause in creating chances but I'd like an option of an aerial threat up top and Lafferty can't fill that role.
