Are Rangers yet to make January’s big signing?

The past 10 days have been heaven for us Rangers fans. Winning the Old Firm comfortably was followed by securing four significant signatures – two massive ones, two very decent ones.

So it’s safe to say morale is pretty high right now – but claims are being made that January’s window work is far from over, and indeed the ‘best is yet to come’.

In short, it is being posited that Steven Davis and Jermain Defoe are NOT the marquee winter signings for Steven Gerrard, and someone very special is on the horizon still.

Is this realistic?

It must be remembered that Rangers haven’t spent a penny this window – two loans and two pre-contracts don’t suggest powerful spending to get our man. It’s living within our means, and that’s fair enough, but it’s harder to sign top players at this time of the year without forking out.

But it’s what Rangers have done so far – and we know Steven Gerrard will be supported with a budget, albeit a limited one, and we would realistically suggest the funds are there for one big signing like the price of a Connor Goldson. AKA around £3M, if the right player comes up.

And who could that be? What positions do Rangers need strengthened? Attack currently has Alfredo Morelos (for now), Kyle Lafferty and Jermain Defoe, plus Ryan Hardie should Gerrard recall him.

Wings are filled with Ryan Kent, Daniel Candeias, Jordan Jones this summer, Glenn Middleton and Eros Grezda.

The creative midfield section comprises of Steven Davis and Carlos Pena, with a returning Graham Dorrans imminent too.

Central midfield boasts Scott Arfield, Lassana Coulibaly, Glen Kamara this summer and possibly Davis again.

Defensive midfield sees Ryan Jack, Ross McCrorie and Jordan Rossiter while defence is imbued with Joe Worrall, Nikola Katic, Gareth McAuley and Connor Goldson.

Last but not least fullback is filled with Jon Flanagan, Andy Halliday, Borna Barisic and Lee Wallace.

Do any of these critically need supplements? We’d have to argue the one position that isn’t convincing remains AM. Steven Davis, as good a player as he is, is not a lockpick. And we can’t rely on Graham Dorrans’ fitness in there either, while Carlos Pena is as good as a busted flush.

The one position Rangers do need someone in is genuine playmaker – a maestro of vision and flair, which is something we have lacked consistently for some time.

Such players aren’t cheap, and a youth player like Ejaria are duds because it needs immediate experience and maturity, not a developing kid who doesn’t know how to read the attack or how to pick out a pass.

To get what we’d need Gerrard would need upwards of £3M or a smart loan deal for a 25+ year old who’s out of favour at his current club.

Why does the name Scott Allan spring to mind…

  2. Scott Allen can GTF. Had his chance, chose them over his supposed boyhood heroes.

I'd rather a return for Macleod from brentford

Totally agree. 99.9% if us never get the chance. For someone to get the chance and not want to wait 6 months to sign a pre-contract is poor, but their call. For a Rangers fan to sign for them instead of waiting 6 months to sign with us is incomprehensible. Made bed, now lie in it. Without soap of course.
McLeod is in that boat and never wanted to leave, suspect he may want to come home.

  3. Forget about Allan , Judas!
Last season on a Friday night at dens park he was over joyed at getting one over on us.
He was delighted to noise up the travelling bears when they went in front.
    No thanks!

  4. You didn't mention RB. What if Tav picks up an injury, Flanagan has covered there in the past but he has went off boil lately.

  5. If theres another signing to come, bigger than Defoe and Davis, it will hardly be Allen , who even if we signed him it would be a pre contract as they wouldn`t sell him to us.I agree with you that the No 10 role is where we are still short as I don`t count Pena and don`t know when or if Dorrans will be fit but Allen is not the answer .Need to think bigger not just bigger headlines.

  6. The only signing bigger than defoe without spending big would be MR.GERRARD registering himself, total timplosion! seriously though for a another FB i would enquire about melling of ROSENBORG?

  7. signing ALLAN is up there with bringing wee naisy back or wee MO where fans are concerned, need togetherness not disharmony. ultimately, we would not sign their cast off's and secondaly hand over a blue pound end of.

  8. It occurs to me that if we go with 2 up front, we don't need a No 10 as urgently. A DM, a CM and 2 wingers with 2 forwards.
Options would be 4-4-2, or 4-1-3-2 against weaker teams, even 3-5-2 away from home against stronger teams eg them.
If SG is happy we now have 2 quality forwards, or 3 if Hardie comes home, then playing 2 up front becomes viable. Suspect he doesn't see Lafferty as quality.

  9. For The Attacking Mid Position
    …Lewis Ferguson

    For the RB Position
    …The Boy from Killie (O'Donnell?)
